How hard is it to be accepted to this SEO Program?

hard as hell, i heard.

are there any other organizations that help with internships that are "easier" to get into?

How about Inroads? I hear thats a bit easier. Im asian though and i believe that inroads is for Native and African Americans and Hispanics. Right ?

I was looking through the SEO site, and it doesn't necessarily say that freshman cannot apply, it just says they select students that are "mature." Does that mean that its completely worthless to apply as a freshman or is it worth a shot?

why would you want to do SEO freshmen year? That's so stupid

Uhm...why not? Obviously it'd be the summer internship going into sophomore year, so I don't see how doing it a year later instead of the year before is suddenly a better idea. If you're going to say something like that, I'd appreciate a little more detail.

Try to do SEO ASAP. I know InRoads stops accepting after sophomore year. As a "rising" sophomore, you can apply to SEO and Goldman Sachs Camp. PM me if you want the camp application from next year (fwded to me from friends at the Wharton School).

InRoads is for minorities, however, Asians are sadly not counted as minorities anymore (e.g., affirmative action). Most of the applicants are Hispanics, African Americans, and Native Americans. InRoads does not guarantee you an internship--it only puts you in a talent pool. Why bother with that when you can straight get a job yourself?

And... in investment banks, you don't want to let anyone know you're InRoads. Let them know if you are SEO if you want. InRoads: you don't want to be the token minority kid.

**Apply for any internships whenever possible. Whether junior in HS or senior.. I started working in 9th grade, and have been working since. I've had internships every year since senior year of HS.

"InRoads is for minorities, however, Asians are sadly not counted as minorities anymore (e.g., affirmative action). "

this is really unfair.

"I've had internships every year since senior year of HS."

im trying to do that as well.
what kind of internships did you have in college? especially the first two years.

I did not know about GS camp, so thank you. I'm not sure if that would be available to me. I assuming rising sophomore means that you're a sophomore at the time you're applying right? Or is it that you're a sophomore at the time you start working (which would mean the summer after freshman year). I'm assuming the former, but I'm not so sure. The only program that I know is actually open to freshmen applicants is the JP Morgan Honors program, which it says is open to "students of diverse backgrounds, but not limited" to URM's.

Asians are accepted into Inroads...

how do i join SEO?

Hey, thatbiggbadwolfy, i tried PM'in you, but your message space is full

Hey Madskillz, just PM me again--I cleared some old messages.

Asians, yes, they are accepted into InRoads, but very, very few. It's like how 4XL and Posse Foundation... although they have a selet few Asians, most are African Americans... affirmative action-eque right there.

Below is my edit (I'm at work and can't wait for the 20 minute flood control)

Hey Madskillz, just PM me again--I cleared some old messages.

Asians, yes, they are accepted into InRoads, but very, very few. It's like how 4XL and Posse Foundation say it's for minorities..., most are African Americans, Latinios, or Native Americans... There are NO Asians on any of those sites. There are only a few Asians, which I believe, is being the "token Asian of InRoads" so you can transition to the "token minority" at an ibank/firm. Affirmative action-eque right there.

Last time I checked:

Minority: For EEO official reporting purposes, and for purposes of the work force analysis required in Revised Executive Order No. 4, the term "minority" includes Blacks, Hispanics, Alaskan Natives or American Indians, and Asian or Pacific Islanders.

http://www.ml4t.org/v2/mba.html

^ Even this program I want to go to is primarily for African Americans. So, I'd rather take my chances, cold call, or apply via Monster.

Remember, InRoads does not guarantee you a job. Even though they are "partners" with Goldman Sachs etc, if you are selected out of a GPA range of 2.8-3.7, with most being 3.0-3.3 (I looked at the InRoads recruiter's data while she wasn't looking) and outliers being say, 2.7/8 on the extreme low (and her telling African American candidates they had a good chance with that GPA)........... you're thrown into a "talent pool."

What that means is, they revise your r

I think saying InRoads is garbage is too harsh a criticism. I am currently an Inroads intern at GOldman Sachs. I will probably leave Inroads to do SEO my junior year because SEO in my opinion is a better program but that does not mean InRoads is garbage.

fyi: There is a good number of Asian-American InRoaders that work with me, so I don't know what your talking about.

Im in so cal and I am also an INROADer. Asian as well, working for Procter & Gamble. Saying that INROADS is garge is ignorant and foolish. Just because INROADS doesn't guarantee you a job doesn't mean it's any worse of a program. They provide opportunities for you and if you aren't qualified, why should companies hire you? They train you, prep you for the interviews, and help students as young as High School seniors (I would know, I got my internship as 17 year old at INROADS). Is that what you call garbage?

Also, I'd say the amount of asians at the So Cal/Arizona INROADS region is at least 25% asian.

If you're interested in marketing like I am, I'd go the INROADS route, since they have companies like Nike, Procter & Gamble, GE, and Coke.

To SpookyAlien: No, it's the latter. You are a rising sophomore the summer between your freshman and sophomore years.

Does Inroads have any success in placing you into prestigous internship with IBanks, Consulting, Fortune 500, or Big 4 accounting? Also are some of the programs at SEO less competitive than the IBanking, like the Accounting or Global Leadership?

So let's dissect InRoads: How is it different than from placing a group of students together to compete with one another? Do you enjoy being the token minority? Do you even see how InRoads is not lobbying for Asians, as their program is primarily African-American, Latino, and Hispanic?

How does it feel to know that the only reason you got your Goldman Sachs internship was because of some Public Relations ploy that elevated your application among the hundreds of Ivy Leaguers who are competing internally--whose online applications from prestigious schools such as MIT, Harvard, Yale are not being reviewed because of a ratio quota?

If your views are Machiavellian, then fine, take a stab at every available opportunity but take your reward with a grain of salt: You will always be the token minority. Your co-workers will start asking, why does this intern have to attend all these "InRoads" conferences and get to miss work on paid leave pro-rate?

Even so, having a program such as InRoads that professes to equal opportunity and yet--and here is my own anecdotal evidence--that does not bother to respond to the applications with transcripts attached even though their GPA's are 3.8+ at a Tier 1 school, compared to a favored minority (non-Asian) who scored a mere 3.2? Think about this: I know a dozen people who weren't even put into this talent pool. No they did not call the recruiters names and handled their paperwork efficiently and effectively.

SEO is respectable, but InRoads definitely needs some clarification on its application.

And to mssales: Your success is not even guaranteed, but you may end up at the Bain's, PwC's, and the GS's of the financial/consulting/auditing industries. May but not sure. Why not try Monster.com?
