Can one school give both and another only one? A private school gave a combined $7200 per year in these two grants and another gave only 3700 in one of them (pell). Since they're both federal aid - should all schools be able to access this $$?

Thanks,
Rachel

Only Pell is guaranteed. SEOG is campus based, meaning that each school is given a pool of money that they divvy up among their students. You might get SEOG at one school but not at another.

There are 3 federal programs that are what they call campus based aid: SEOG, WS, Perkins loans. Campus based aid means a school is given a very limited amount of dollars for these programs and determines their own criteria and maximums for awarding them. Once they have awarded all the funds they received, they have no more and can not award any more. SEOG, WS and Perkins will vary widely from school to school.

For instance at my son’s school the max SEOG was $100, at my daughter’s the max is $2000. Both schools require a 0 EFC for SEOG consideration. But even with a 0 EFC my daughter did not receive it last year as they had no SEOG left by the time they got to her.

Pell and stafford are not campus based so you should get whatever you are eligible for and it will likely be the same at each school (though Stafford may vary depending on the school’s COA and what other aid you receive - you can’t go over the school’s COA).
