Separate email account for all things college...does kid use that email address for the common app?

For the parents out there that set up a separate email account for all things college, did your kid use that email address for the common application log on and correspondance?

Oops, correspondence.

Yes, that’s precisely what I did with both of my sons. One of them is much more conscientious than the other, and so I did not need to check in and confirm that he had submitted everything by the proper deadlines, but I wanted access. I like this system, because it allows parents and students privacy for other correspondences, but gives them a mailbox to share. My kids went to boarding school, furthermore, and so I needed the device for things like application fees when I wasn’t under the same roof.

We did the same thing. Set up an email account for student that I have access to as well. This is used for anything college (submitting interest online or at fairs) and certainly the common app. That way things don’t get lost or missed in the social email (which is obviously private) and student wasn’t comfortable using the high school email because it lacks good search features. It would be great to say I can count on them to see and reply promptly to everything on their own, but with APs and ACTs and all else that goes with being a HS junior/senior, I just like keeping an eye on things and encouraging the process if need be. Seemed easier than asking, “Is everything done?” all the time. Worked with my first two, now on to my third to apply to college!

Yes, we did it with all three kids and they were appreciative. Worked great. They get bombarded with so many e-mails, some very important some delete worthy. Once they accept a college they will get an e-mail from that college and the old box is no longer needed. They didn’t use the shared box for anything that wasn’t college related so it was easy to set up files and keep everything organized. My third was particularly deluged as he plays a sport and that was in play - coaches love to send love e-mails. Almost all the colleges send you a portal so that adds a password and an e-mail to every single college application that also needs to be checked - which the kids did, but invariable it was not a user name or password that is easy to remember so the shared box was good for retrieving and forwarding lost user names and passwords. It’s a long road from August to April.

We also set up an email that was used for all college correspondence and it worked out well.

Yes. My D used a separate email account for all things college. I recommend this approach. It’s like having a work email and a personal email. As said above, once your kid is accepted/selects a college, he or she can close down the “admissions email address” and start using the college email address.

Thanks for the info. Will set one up and also have DS use it for the common application

I wish we had, would have saved a HUGE amount of nagging and sweating on my part with D2. Do it, you won’t be sorry!
