Can someone explain how the scoring is going to change for the Sept ACT. Will the Essay be incorporated in the composite? I am a little confused. Thanks in advance.
The New Essay will be scored on a 1 to 36 scale, similar to the other four sections (English, Math, Reading, Science). Two readers will grade your essay.
The scaled score for the New Essay is not part of the overall Composite. It will be a separate score.
Thank you @mmk2015 ! I hope the test is not changing too much. I have been using the Red Book and Barrons to practice. I did see the new Essay format… too bad the prompts will no longer be about education/HS.
@wabell I’m pretty sure that it’s just the essay and scoring that’s changing; the content is staying the same.
This link can help you understand the new score report

IF you take the optional writing section you will get an ELA score -the avg. of your E/R and W
As @mmk2015 said, writing does not effect the composite score, because it is optional.
These two new scores will also be generated for Sept test takers
- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM): An average of your Math and Science scores. The score ranges from 1 to 36.
- Understanding Complex Texts: Measures level of proficiency on a subset of items in the Reading test assessing the ability to identify the central meaning and purposes for a range of increasingly complex texts.
Changes from the Red book that you can anticipate are:
- A Duel Passage questions in Reading
- 6 or 7 passages in Science
- More Stats and Probability questions in Math
You may want to try the 2015-2016 released test before the 12th.
