September Reading Mark DOWN

I was consistently getting 32+ in all my practice tests AND I got 32 the last 2 times I took my ACTs...BUT for the Sept ACT I got 28 in reading? Has anybody here experienced a dramatic decrease in you reading mark? Or is it just me? Should I ask for someone to recheck my answer sheet?

Don’t worry about it; this particular Reading Section and curve were just screwed up. I’m sure you’ll do better next time.

it’s a pretty good test, but I’d say the ACT is spotty when it comes to scores. it really just depends on luck in regards to curve/subjects.
I took a practice test the day before the test, and I got a 28 in science. when I got my results yesterday, I got a 36 in science. it’s not that you need to study more, it’s that the september test had an intense curve and some really ambiguous questions.

Yeah, I got 31 in Reading, which is much lower than I did in practice (34-36 range). I was hoping a 35 composite, but because of Reading, it ended up with 34.

Can someone explain why this reading curve was screwed up? i am very confused :(

We’re guessing 1 wrong in Reading was a 34, a very harsh curve for Reading.

I actually think that although the reading curve was very harsh, it did in fact reflect the relative difficulty of the test. I felt like aside from maybe one or two questions everything was very easy.

^ The difficulty of the questions is not the issue here; the point is that there were relatively ambiguous questions, which should not have been on there in the first place. Just because of that, the curve should have been much more generous.

What ambiguous questions?

The heavily debated Wright Bros. question, for example.

That was a really dumb debate. The answer was too obvious for it to be ambiguous.

I agree though, the curve is insane.

^ Oh I bet it seems like a “dumb debate” now that you know what the answer was, but many people didn’t think it was so dumb back when we didn’t know what the answer was. ;)

Nah, I totally knew the answer was prideful. Not sure if posts from that debate is still in my post history, but if ya look, I’m all like “obviously, they were prideful blah blah blah”

I wasn’t sure about the mesh bags though.

Do you think it is realistic to submit a complaint on the disputed questions?

I have to admit, this reading curve was ridiculous. I do believe the mesh bag question (on science) was VERY ambiguous, but the Wright Bros. question was pretty easy in my opinion…I didn’t have to think twice about it. If you look at the excerpt posted back in that debate’s thread, you can see that prideful is the better answer choice. I can see how some students can second guess that, but prideful definitely works better…remember, test taking is all about the BEST answer.

I think the opposite. The mesh bags one was common sense while the Wright Bros. one could have gone either way.

^ I agree; I didn’t find any ambiguity when I answered the mesh bags one (I got it correct), but I did have to spend some time with the Wright Bros. one.

I don’t know what you guys are saying? I got 3 questions wrong in reading and got a 33. I’m sure of it. I can name the 3 questions if I can find the old reading post, but I know the cold one, and 2 others.

^ Well maybe -2 and -3 were both a 33. We’re saying that -1 very likely seems to have been a 34, which is unusually harsh.

What is the mesh bags question? Isn’t that from the science section?
