Serious Question

Over the summer me and my friend went on a trip together. I realized that he is writing about a specific point of this trip and I was also planning on writing about the trip for my common app essay. Would it be damaging to both of us if I went ahead and wrote about this trip?

no it would not, because both of you had two totally different perspectives on the trip. He may have experienced a and you may have experienced b. They will not be alike.

ru sure? I feel like even so some would think that we copied eachother

I guarantee you that an admissions officer who has to read thousands of essays over several months will NOT notice this. Even on the infinitesimal chance that he/she does, it wouldn’t even matter. I’m sure many people write about the same event in the same application cycle.

I guess that is way different from two students claiming to be the valedictorian for the same year or having won the physics olympiad for the same year. Make sure the ideas or lessons learned or effect on your life are not similar at all.
