Serious Safety Questions About Fordham

Does anyone who says Fordham is safe, living off campus?

I think there might be a big difference for people who live on, or off campus. If you live on campus, you are going to be spending more time on campus. But if you live off campus, you have to walk to school early in the morning, you have to walk home late at night. Your not always going to have a group of friends with you to walk the streets. Living off campus is a lot different then living on it.

If I get accepted, I will be living off campus. And looking at the crime data of the neighborhood is not promising, but then some people like blueshirtsrule, say that Fordham is safe.

I wouldn’t let the crime rate stop me from attending, there are tons of kids living off campus, so Im sure it isn’t THAT bad. But it would be cool to hear from students that live off campus.

In response to an increase of applepickers (people who snatch Iphones), Fordham security asked the NYPD to increase patrols in the Belmont section off campus, near Fordham, and including Fordham Road. They are doing so in FORCE. Fordham security is very concerned about the welfare of its students and the NYPD has strong connections with Fordham.

Fordham Rose Hill is a safe campus. Like all urban areas, it has some crime. You must be smart in any college community, whether its urban, suburban or rural. There have been incidents, some of them violent, at otherwise peaceful and bucolic schools like Dartmouth, UNC, Kenyon. It happens.

Part of one’s education at Fordham is the urban experience. Fordham sponsors Urban Plunge to incoming freshmen in the Bronx. I recommend it strongly.

Many Fordham students embrace the Bronx and work in highly rewarding (spiritual, emotional and intellectual) internships to give back to community and help the less advantaged.

Fordham is a safe place to attend college and a truly exceptional experience. It has a slight majority of female to male students. It has a myriad of female faculty, many of whom eat off campus. Further, for football and basketball events, thousands of alumni and family come to Rose Hill, and partake in the exceptional eating establishments on Arthur Ave. The Arthur Ave. restaurants and delis and dessert shops and small convenience stores depend on Fordham students, families and employees for business and therefore are vitally interested in a clean and safe environment for all.

Fordham is a highly competitive school and its very expensive. Sometimes people with negative agendas post here to hurt Fordham. Those who have attended Fordham and those parents whose kids attended or presently attend Fordham love it more than can be measured here. Fordham’s freshmen retention rate is around 89% and that speaks volumes about the experience.

I do not appreciate your rude assumption that I carry a “negative agenda” in order to “hurt Fordham”

I would think ANY reasonable prospective student would try to research a school’s safety (Both On and Off Campus) they are considering applying to/attending. And apparently to you, when one does this, it somehow makes me evil and irrational.

Equally bad are those that create multiple accounts to manipulate and condemn those that ask VALID questions that they somehow find threatening.

I just visited Fordham yesterday. I live in Long Island, so I have gone to countless Yankee games in the Bronx, so safety was a big concern for me. First of all, the area in which Fordham is located is not bad at all (especially compared to the area surrounding Yankee Stadium!) The school is all gated and of all the schools I have visited in the Northeast area the security there was definitely one of the better systems I have seen. I highly suggest you visit because you do not even realize you are in the Bronx and every person I spoke to said the same thing. You can save money living on campus by applying to be an RA in your second year, my sister is at FIT and some of her friends do that to save money. There are options to save money and if you want to get the best experience, I suggest you stay on campus.

Best of luck and do not be overly concerned about the safety!

Just keep your wits about you and you’ll be fine.

These robberies invariably die down after the first few weeks of school, once the non-city students realize you can’t go walking around at night with your cell phone in your hand.
