Seriously conflicted on what I should do about my major.

Im a freshman in college at a state university, and currently majoring in computer science.

However, it’s not going so well and I have been stressing out a lot.

I do not enjoy computer science as much as I thought i would have, currently my weighted grade is 60%, and dont think it’s going to go up much. I originally wanted to go into a medical field, but was talked out of from my parents and they told me the endless possibilites of the computer science field. But, my lack of interest is really showing on my grade.

I want to switch my major into radiologic sciences, I can handle the material and my junior and senior year, I will be in a full time internship at an accredited hospital. Plus, helping people and working in the medical field is something I really want to do!

Also was thinking about MIS, because it’s less programming extensive then CS (but dont know forsure what it’s all about).

But here is my big predicament, the deadline to drop a course is in a month and I have a meeting with my adviser in about two weeks to go over my concerns. But, as of now im taking 15 credits. I cannot drop my CS course because it’s 4 credits, and that will put me below full time and I will get my financial aid withdrew because it does not meet the guidelines.

Any tips or suggestions?

Is there anyway around the 12 credit/financial aid deal? Or would you just stick through the class and just to end up with a passing grade and just accept the toll that it does to my GPA?

Thanks in advance.

Is it possible to change it to pass/fail? Does your school have any 1/2 semester courses, starting in the second half of the semester? If so, that could be a way to get a 2 credit course. Your advisor would have these answers

Computer Science: if u hate it and are not doing well in it, then switching majors is no-brainer.

Ask your adviser if u can get special dispensation to drop the CS course, then take a larger credit courseload next semester, or whatever other options there are.

Thanks for the response, yeah I would assume she does. My meeting is on the 26th of this month, dont think there i is a pass/fail system but ill find out. I guess my best answer is to just try my hardest at least try and get the credit.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking, as well as even take classes during the summer to make up my the ones i missed my first semester. I have my academic advising meeting the 26th, so ill go from there.

I found out there are some half semester courses, for example theres a intro to organic chem that starts in a couple weeks and is 1 credit. But it says it a pre-req for another class that allows pre nursing and other students to enroll in the higher up chem course. You think, even though Im not a nursing major I can still join this course?

Why don’t you ask? Contact the registrar, the department, or your advisor - whoever the appropriate person is at your institution.

I am, i have a meeting with her tomorrow. I just want some more information on it, so I dont sound like a fool when I go in.

In the meantime you likely could find details about Late Add, Drop, Withdrawal, financial aid with withdrawals, etc., in your student handbook or other sources for academic policies.

You won’t sound like a fool for simply asking questions, particularly if the question is whether you can do something that’s not explicitly explained in the handbook.
