Seriously considering FSU...some help please?

So I've visited a couple times and it really seems like a beautiful place. I love the city and the idea of getting to work at the capitol is intriguing. Politics is my passion and theres no better place in the state for a politics addict like myself. Plus I feel like I can come out with money in my pocket (maybe alot) being an instate student. But I'm still hesitant and as my junior year comes to a close I know I'm gonna have to start making some decisions. Here are the stats:

African American male
1380 SAT (2000/2400)...will be taking it again
3.75 uw gpa (4.23 weighted)
Top 5% of class
IB diploma candidate
EC's/community service:
lots of national, state, and county recognition/awards...state officer positions. a bunch of leadership in school. not gonna go into too much detail, really doesnt matter that much you kinda get the picture I guess.

I love the location, I love the look of the school, the weather is perfect, D1 sports, great place for politics. Fits every criteria I'm looking for except I'm concerned about the academics.

What is the honors program like? Are your classes really smaller and more rigorous if they accept you? Are the other students in the program going to provide stimulating interations and conversations?

What about the honors dorm? Bigger? Better?

Anybody know of kids comming out with extra money after scholarships and such? How much?

Internships at the capitol? Easy to get?

Currently FSU very high on my list. I dont really have a #1 though. I'm also looking at UVA and Georgtown. So i guess what im asking is can someone please tell me why FSU should be my #1?

ps...I would never go to UF

I don't know, with your intended major its kinda hard passing up one of the best schools to study politics, and being that you're instate (not sure) it may be a great place to stay at.

one i wouldn't reccomend the honors program, I'm a senior and i went through the ib program and now after going through that I no longer feel like getting put up in a pedestal which comes with being "advanced", and other than the honors dorms there aren't that many perks.

In terms of scholarships, I think i got a great deal, FSU gave me there highest scholarship and at the moment, i'm scheduled to be getting paid to go to class not much but around $200 when bright futures gets added and housing gets paid..

Thats all i have to say, chances are that by next year you're mind will have changed just like every junior does, so have fun senior year.

The biggest perks for honors is special small stimulating sections of classes, Landis is a really nice, new dorm and you get to register for classes with the seniors so you won't have any problem getting the courses you want. With FAS and the University Scholarship, you won't have very much money to layout at all.

The Washington DC area schools do have a lot of national government internship opportunities but both of those schools are a lot more expensive than FSU unless they offer you a full ride. The FSU college of social sciences did notify the students of paid internship opportunities at the DoD through the Washington Center for second semester sophomores and above. I don't have any knowledge about state government specific opportunities but I am sure they exist.

First of all, UF is a fine school, so if you suddenly decide on engineering, UF's the place.

For political science, FSU is THE place in Florida. Ssobick may be able to provide additional info. US News has FSU's poli sci program at

Here's a recent thread of a recently admitted FSU freshman concerning financial aid: <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=323171%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=323171</a></p>

I personally worked a legislative session in the Capitol while a student at FSU...it's a great experience.

Here is a thread with rankings: <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=194140%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=194140</a></p>

hmm, it seems like such a no brainer to me. maybe if one of the DC area schools came across with alot of money but they aren't really known for that. I still haven't really heard anything extremely positive about the honors program though. Are all of your classes smaller or just a few?

Lots of details on Honors here in the FSU section.

A few advantages:

Priority scheduling
Better chances for research as an undergrad
Honors dorm
smaller classes with full professors (lower division classes)

I'd suggest personally visiting the Honors staff and discussing your options. Also - visit Admissions, discuss your academic credentials personally with an admissions official and above all - apply early!

You can search for SPECIAL PROGRAM "HONORS" courses for FALL 2007 for example. For FALL 2007 I found 69 honors and 67 honors in the major sections available (uncheck the show open sections box to see all) You can see how many students are allowed to take each section so you get a feel for the size of the class and schedule possibilities. Compare the results with the size of regular sections of classes to see the attention you get in honors. Also you can read about each class by clicking on the section or going to the major web sites to read more.

Only an observation as I'm not comparing anybody to anybody else, but I am familar with Virginia schools. If you are really very interested in politics you would want to give serious consideration (programs and chances) to the Northern Virginia schools, Georgetown, George Washington, William and Mary, George Mason, UVA along with other possibles.

Hey my post. I was just wondering how much on my own I would pay. Turns out nothing(having a single mom comes in handy for once). Quick question though, do I get the $815 difference back? Also I retaking the ACTs in attempt to get the 100% bright futures. Will the other grants change or will it just be more aid in the end?

Thank you for your time

At FSU, any leftover scholarship money is either put into your SunTrust FSU account or they mail you a check depending on your preference.

Hey thanks for all the help guys. All of your advice has really got me considering things I previously had not. I think I really like this school but I guess we'll see what happens.

The biggest thing for me about honors is the early registration. That's reason enough to be in the honors program.
