Seriously need help: I want to cry

I got an email saying my award package was done and when I checked it, it was a $3000 loan, yet nothing about scholarships. I really needed some scholarship money to be able to go and I was expecting some. So, does that mean I got $0 in scholly's or is that money awarded seperately. Understand, I'm at an emotional low right now.

My scholarship was listed with the award package...

this entire maryland board on this site is upset. People have been posting less too. No one likes there package and everyone seems sad. Same thing at PSU but people there are laughing it off.
It sucks. The scholarships were listed on that page.
I THINK, THINK!!!!, that departmental scholarships come out first week of april.

Well, I've seen people in scholars get scholarships and I got into Civicus which accepts only like 70 kids so I'd think that I'd get some money. Ahh, if not it looks like it'll be the hometown University of Nevada

if civicus is a dept, which i guess it is, I think they give out scholarships during the first week of April. Civicus is community service work right?? From what I have been able to tell the merit scholarships span all programs. THose in honors have high stats and get scholarships. Those in scholars also have high stats. The Civicus program is part of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. maybe soon we'll get scholarships from departments and if so the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences might give you one.

If i am wrong about department scholarships someone TELL ME! Some of my friends and I are hoping for them...

Maryland gives terrible aid. We got a 3,500 scholarship for a year. When I called, they said it was because we were low income. Does that mean if my income goes up next year we may not get it?. We got a subsidized stafford loan for 2,625 and work study for up to 1,400. Where is the rest of the money supposed to come from? I think parent plus loans but I'm not sure I can make payments that high. I know I can't. MD says it cost 19,863.00 on it's information. But I subtracted the 2,880 they added in for transportation and spending money because we live 40 min. away. That still leaves another 12,283 a year to borrow. The stuff they mailed me said the interest rate is 9 percent. . That is really high. That's coming out with 50 grand in debt. (but hopefully not that much because I will pay every cent I have as we go along) Have another kid who starts college next year--single mom with low income. I am really scared. I am terrible at this kind of stuff and having trouble understanding the aid packages we get. They have aid coundelors you can go talk to. I think I'd better . From what I've read in the paper the board of regents , who I think control the money are not the most trustworthy people. Has anyone met with a financial aid counselor? Are they any help? What happens to all the aid money given to people who don't come? Do they give that out? I don't see how people figure all this stuff out...................By the way when I called, they said that was all the aid they were giving out.

cheapseats - Last year Departmental award notifications were sent during the first week of April. We are still keeping our fingers crossed, too.

maryland girl - If you look at threads from other colleges and the financial aid thread, there are many students and parents who are both angry and confused about the offers of aid they are receiving. I would strongly suggest you meet with the financial aid department at UMD at your soonest convenience. Like many others, I have a feeling you are going to be disappointed with the results, but a face to face meeting is the only way to resolve all your questions.

Unfortunately, the remainder is probably something close to your expected family contribution, but a meeting with the financial aid people at the school should help you plan your way.

The next few weeks are probably the most stressful for many students and their families, who have been accepted to college, but now must figure out how to align their college dreams with their financial realities.

Good luck to all.

thanks gnusasaurus--I will meet with them. No one is asking for handouts or a free ride, but I think people just want something they can work with. We are 6th or 7th generation Marylanders------Our kids work hard and want to go to State U. It's something they have always dreamed of. Maryland is forcing alot of it's brightest kids out of state. Personally, I feel the living in the dorms away from home is as an important education as the classroom education part is. I know alot of people don't feel this way. Our situation is unfortunate as the income here is below 40,000 and no dad to help. I do think the state of Maryland could help their own out a little more. I will meet with them and let you know what they say. I feel sorry for kids that have no parent at all to help. How are they supposed to navigate through all this when the parents can hardly do it?
