Seriously, what is a "good" score for a URM applying to competitive schools?

the people that got accepted from your school..they must’ve had something!

Anon from post 9… my god, that’s ridiculous! I should just drop my entire college list and apply to Harvard if what you’re saying is true!

Perhaps, the boy wanted to be near family?

My friends brother is black and he got into Princeton, with a 2400 SAT, so i assume a 2400 is a good score ;)!

Your score is more than fine, might want to drop off those public school/stingy private when applying. Apply to top privates along with a safety or two.

1990/2010 is a respectable score by any means.

Imo for low income URM, 2100 becomes a great score, 2200+ is like magic.

XD I just found this comment kinda funny. You wish you were less fortunate?

Besides, UChicago is a frickin’ fantastic school. One of my friends was accepted (class of '08), visited, and fell in love with it, but her parents weren’t willing to pay the tuition, so she went to a school that she didn’t like as much because it offered her more money. -___- Unless you just don’t like the atmosphere (after all, no school is perfect for EVERYONE), I don’t understand why you want to transfer so badly. It seems kinda like you just want to go to a slightly more “prestigious” school, given your list of transfer options. Maybe you didn’t even give Chicago a chance since you were deadset on the Ivies/MIT? I don’t want to assume. And hey, it’s your life.

To the original poster: I really admire you for prevailing in such an unfortunate situation. No school is out of reach for you; just make sure, as other posters have implied, that you can get enough FA to support you at the schools you really want to attend.

I’d say score as high as possible. I scored a 2370 on my SAT (with a 2350 on three SAT II’s), am Black and still got rejected at Princeton and MIT. To be honest, no score will guarantee you admission, but certain scores will certainly disqualify you…regardless of what anyone says. I’d say you should aim for a 2100 or higher. Good Luck!

This year, a Black male from my school got accepted into Dartmouth with a 1650. Last year, a black male from my school got accepted into Brown with a 1590.

I knew AA helped…but I had no idea it was this drastic.

It’s really not that low. Try to raise it up a little bit, but honestly you have good chances, i think (maybe not berkeley).

“NYU, UC Berkeley (OOS)”

I’d be concerned about the cost of these two as neither is particularly generous with FA.

Cervantes, would a 2070 be considered like a 2100, or is their like a tier system for every 100 points, bc i got a 2070, which is like a few questions away. I just wonder how it will be looked at, for college admission.

I really don’t know. I think a 2070 would be viewed like a 2100, but why should you be happy with just that? If I were you I’d retake so you can get your best possible score. If you can get a 2200, think about how much less you’d have to worry about your SAT score. Obviously, if you can’t take the time or put in the effort to retake don’t retake. But I would strongly advise you to take another hand at it, especially if your bro can help you with his 2400 skills.
