Hi Moms and Dads! I wanted to share with you all something. For you guys that are Parents of incoming Class of 2011.. Join your local Parents Clubs! :)

One of the first things I did when Lola recieved her Appointment in Jan. was to contact the Georgia USNA Parents Club. We attended the Dark Ages Meeting in February and yesterday we attended the Firstie Parents Luncheon at NAS Atlanta. I feel that we have already made new friends and connections that will be there for us over the next 4 years. And the Stories the Firstie Parents shared were so inspirational to me and especially to Lola as she prepares to head to USNA.

We have already been paired up with a Sponsor family that lives near us and have met another mom that is here on CC that is very involved in our Parents Club. The Parents clubs are not so much for the support of the parents but for our Kids!

If any of you all are in Georgia .. let me know and I will send you the link for the Parents club. I think the Website is wonderful (thanks to the new webmasters) with great photos, links and information on upcoming events for the 2011 Plebes, 2010 Plebes and Firstie Commissioning.

Thanks for making that post!! So many times we 'forget' about the personal assistance available to Academy parents. If you have a prospective cadet entering USMA Class of 2011; please check out the links below.

Because of the newest privacy acts, you will likely have to seek out the parent club in your area. The Academies can no longer freely dispense this private info.

Contact them before you make that assumption. These are volunteer organizations and may not currently have anyone to maintain their web page.

USNA Alumni Association has a listing of the USNA Parents Clubs web pages and Presidents so you can contact the parent club president if you find that the web page is not being maintained or link is broken.

Also make sure you start joining the parents list serves. Lots information is shared there between current parents, parents of graduates B&G's and sponsor parents. A place to share parenting issues in support of our SA kids.

Please note that if a club has no website listed, that doesn't mean they are not active. They may have no webmaster, they may not have updated their info with the Public Affairs Office at WP, etc........... If no link or e-mail address is given please send an e-mail to Dolores.Salvatore@usma.edu and ask if there is an active club in your area. I do believe Dolores' name and e-mail address are mentioned at the top of that page.

Some parents clubs have web sites, some do not. The Greater Cincinnati Area USAFA Parents Club does not have a website, but we are definitely active -- Appointee Brunch, Post-Doolie Day Out Picnic for parents, Fall Tailgate (ok, sports-bar-gate) for the Air Force-Navy game, All-Academy Ball, Dark Days Sunshine boxes... whatever we can do to help parents survive and thrive during the academy years.

Because of privacy laws, Admissions may not be able to supply the local parents' clubs with your names. Relying on word of mouth is one way to make contact, but not very efficient. The best way possible is to reach out to your local clubs. I'm not sure about the other service academies, but many WP chapters plan an orientation for incoming cadet candidates and their families during June. Families usually find these sessions highly valuable.

The USNA parents clubs do get a listing of all incoming plebes in your state. From USNA it comes through the Alumni association which the parents clubs fall under. The clubs get the information as soon as it is available. In our state and our club it is the policy, due to privacy laws, to not post the names of incoming plebes on a public web page. We do however post names etc once the family joins our parent club or attends parent club functions i.e. Plebe Picnic and Governor's Send Off - the pictures will identify the plebes2be. Our parents club president does call each incoming family, once the information is available from the Alumni association, to welcome both the plebe to be and their family to our states USNA Parents club. We also include both an e-mail and telephone number for the club president where a new family may also make contact with the club.
