Service Academy Transfer > Civilian Transfer???

Will coming from the Naval Academy help my cause? I have heard that since we have more obligations than a civilian student that a lower GPA is more tolerable. I'm a junior transfer applicant from the United States Naval Academy and I'm looking to get into the University of Michigan for the Winter term. I'm a Quantitative Economics major (half math/half econ) with a 3.24 GPA, but I'm looking to switch into Mathematical Sciences or pure Mathematics if I get accepted to Michigan. In high school I had a 3.4 weighted and a 3.3 unweighted GPA. I received a 28 on the ACT. I have pretty extensive extra curriculars and was an All-American water polo player in high school. I also have played polo for two years here at the Naval Acadmey. I would have a lot higher GPA, but my last semester was ridiculously hard and I ended up with a 2.63 for the semester/b. I'm also worried that my decision to apply to Michigan was really late and I **submitted my application on September 30th, the day before the deadline; however, all of other required materials made it in before then. In two years I have 72 credits to date which I believe somewhat displays a challenging course load. My transcript at the academy looks like this:

I have started taking these courses for this current 2008 fall semester because I am forced to go to class while the process for my separation goes through (it takes a couple weeks and I will be going back home to Michigan October 20th), although I won't be receiving any credit.

Do I have a decent chance to be accepted?

Youir last semester worries me. Otherwise, I would have said you have an excellent chance of getting in. Still, the USNA is very highly regarded institution and your background is definitely very interesting. You definitely have a good shot.

Maybe you should mention how you aren't given nearly as much freedom in choosing your classes (I know a couple of people who go to the Academy. Mention how at most universities, you can gear classes more towards your interests / take relatively easier classes in things you're bad at?), plus you were taking a much heavier course load in terms of hours than at most institutions. Goodluck!

Quote: "my decision to apply to Michigan was really late and I submitted my application on September 30th, the day before the deadline;"

The deadline for early admission was Oct 31...., don't worry about it.

@michiganfan911: The deadline for transfer students was October 1.

The director of admissions used to be in charge of admissions at the Air Force Academy. FWIW. From what I have seen, there is substantial respect for the military academies here at Michigan.

And we will always love Navy for beating Notre Dame. :)

thanks all. accepted! :)

Not surprised. You have a pretty awesome profile. All the best to you.

I beleived it was policy that a midshipmen's commitment started after their plebe year, it is unusual to get to "transfer" out midway through your junior year.

I thought it started Junior year, so after plebe or 3/C(that's what the call sophomores now, right?) year they can leave w/o a commitment.

I was Navy ROTC years ago and did my 4 year committment in the military. But your commitment started the day you began your junior year. I remember also that half our NROTC class quit and most did at end of sophmore year, thus getting 2 years of free tuition. I realy don't have any sympathy for people getting out of thier commitment and I find it difficult to believe someone can leave the USNA during jr year, any college administrator should ask some tough questions on why theis person is transferring out and the type of discharge he is getting (but unfortunately you can't ask the type of discharge).

I checked up on when the military service obligation starts (5 years), it starts when you start your jr year. If you try to get out after your start your jr year, you either have to go in as enlisted or pay back Uncle Sam.
