One of the main reasons I'm applying to Haverford is its proximity to Philadelphia. I want to attend a liberal arts college that is close to a major city so that there are multiple opportunities for community service in an urban setting. Are any of you who are currently attending Haverford involved in community service? Do you know others who are? What kind of opportunities are available, and are a lot of students involved?

Also, I plan to study abroad during my junior year. Are any of you also planning to do so, and what does Haverford offer in the way of study abroad programs? What percentage (approx) of students study abroad?

Thanks in advance for all responses!!

Community Service is a fairly popular occurrence, as, many Haverford students like myself, participated in a wide number of community service projects before entering college. Our Eighth Dimension Office, for community service, maintains a list of projects that students are involved in. In addition, you can start your own project or participate in one-time community service events that happen throughout the year.

As for study abroad, I think around 60% of each class chooses to study abroad, mainly during the spring of their junior year (although, some leave in the fall, or even sophomore year). There are a number of places to go, but you're usually restricted by those relevant to your major and/or concentraion (a Bio major certainly can't go to a school of economics in Europe). I put up the link for the Study Abroad Office to check things out further:
