Service Scholar

Does anyone have info about the Service Scholar program? How competitive is it? Are the only requirements the 75 hrs/semester, etc? They offer $2400 a year for the program but would love to hear some personal experiences and insight.
thanks

Well, I just sent off my application last week and I do know that they would like it that you have gone further than the expected 75 hours and have shown commitment to a certain organization(s) or group(s). And i would have to say YES about it being competitve since they limit the number to only about 12 freshmen each year.

Who is eligible?
High school graduates who have shown excellence in engagement to their community and have an interest in continuing to enhance their learning through service at FSU. We encourage you to explore all our Service Scholar web pages to learn more about the program as well as current and past scholars.

Scholar Activities
Service Scholars attend monthly Scholar Evenings throughout each Fall and Spring semester. These Evenings consist of speakers, workshops, and reflection opportunities that enhance the Scholars’ service experiences at FSU and in the Tallahassee community.

Scholars complete a minimum of 75 service hours per semester, participate in individual and group service projects, engage in learning, and promote community participation among their peers. Scholars partake in socials, retreats, and group projects creating a family-like community throughout their college career.

Scholar Coursework
Students will attend a two semester, one hour colloquium designed to inform and enhance their service experience here at FSU. The Fall colloquium will expose them to several areas of potential service in Leon County, along with introductions to several agency representatives serving in these areas. The Spring colloquium will encourage student focus in one or two areas, with faculty and agency members contributing knowledge and theory essential to a sustainable, informed service effort in those areas.

I copied this directly form the website so hopefully this will help answer your questions! :)

Thanks for the information. I don’t really see myself as competitive for this. I have the normal service hours, but beyond that, I would have things like a missions trip, volunteer at church, involvement with gov clubs/teams at school, etc. I do have an law internship but not sure that really qualifies.

It does sound competitive. I received an email inviting me to apply for it. Do that send it to everyone?
thanks and good luck

D2 was offered this opportunity when she was a freshman. She passed it up, thinking the academic workload would be too much if she did both.

Hind sight is always 20-20, but both can be done.

D2 did graduate with honors and received a top 1% award in her college. (Please excuse the shameless parental bragging. )

Yeah I think they do send it to everyone because I received an email as well. And you never know the application isn’t too much worth it’s always worth the try. I mean what you have mentioned seems pretty competitve to me. The money you receive would help you a great deal. Good luck with your decisions! :)
