Service Selections

A very interesting contradiction of information was provided to me in the last few days from full time Naval officers. The freshman councilor at the scholarship college said. “With good grades, and good military record, and everything else is acceptable, chances of receiving first choice is very likely.” On the other hand, a Blue and Gold Officer said that "chances of receiving first choice in a NROTC unit is not very good compared to those attending the academy."

What to believe? I know I can find the information of percentages of 1st choice service selections from the academy but, is there any “GOOD” information regarding service selection from a NROTC Unit, and what is the likely hood of receiving first choice service selection?

It's true that your chances of getting your first choice are higher at the Academy...assuming you perform well while you're there. NROTC mids also have a very good chance of getting the billets they want. NROTC is considerably more competitive though, because you're in a pool with mids from 59 other units across the country.

Spec War and Spec Ops are extremely difficult to get into from NROTC. Where about 25 are selected from USNA, even less than that are selected from all the NROTC units. An ensign who graduated from my unit last year is one of only two ROTC grads in his BUD/S class....the other 6 or 7 (when they classed up) were all Academy grads.

Either way, If you work hard and show the Navy that you can perform, your chances of getting your first choice are pretty good.

If you really want a "good" chance of getting your first choice, attending the USMMA is the way to go! (especially for flight school)

I went on a visit to USNA in late feb. The admissions officer said 95% get their first choice.

Zaphod,
I think S & S has a case of the "this is what I heard"
A few years ago I was quoted at BGO training that the stat was closer to 90-92% received EITHER their 1st or 2nd choice of billet......
