i just got back from orientation… it was pretty intense but it really made me want to go to bu. and smg is amazing, as always. they changed a few things this year, like they gave out your terrier id at the end of orientation instead of at the beginning of the school year. if anyone has questions i’ll be happy to answer them.

So was orientation more of a school wide BU thing or was it more based on which school you were in? Can you give an overview of everything that happened? I don't want to be caught off guard when I go next week. Btw, do you get a roommate while at orientation?

i think most people met each other at the city excursions on wednesday night, but i got there around 7:30 on wednesday night so no one was around until a lot later. everything turned out fine though. you get a roommate and i think you're placed in your room sort of in the order that you arrive but i'm not sure because i arrived late and my roommate had been there since 10 AM. she was out on the city excursion so i didn't meet her until 10 or 11 PM. you get a schedule when you arrive so bring that with you. you're mostly with your student advisor and your group, who are all in the same school as you, but there are lots of presentations where everyone is all together.

Orientation is over and I'm kinda sad. I was totally getting used to the idea of freedom and meeting new people. And, to top it off, I have two more weeks of high school left. shudder

Anyways, all that said, here's my brief spiel on Orientation. I listened to CC regarding the "bring a fan" advice. It was totally not worth it. Maybe I came on off days, but the I didn't use the fan once; it just made my roommate look at me funny. My roommate actually rather ignored me the whole time; I'd guess we didn't have too much in common. Oh, and guys, first impressions are extremely, extremely, important. I can't say the same for the girls (not having the same sort of social experience), but first time I go up to my floor, all the guys are standing in the hallway, mocking two kids who were acted sketchy by randomly entering other people's rooms. I can't comment on the validity of the story, but still, I suggest you don't do anything dumb unless you like being ridiculed. As I learned, you also need to be the one to make introductions with other people. I had a few girls talk with me (most were empty-headed/spoiled [one commented- "eww" when I told her I took a bus up]) but in most cases, you'll have to make the first question of "What's your name". It's real awkward at first, but can be really rewarding: I made friends with a few stunningly beautiful girls I noticed earlier! :)

odin64x** I'll answer your questions as well. Orientation was based by school; being in SMG, most of tours/speeches were in SMG. There are some basic lectures on safety and stuff, but the important parts are divided by school. I'll give a brief overview if you like:

-Wed.
Nothing of importance. Minor assembly to amp up your BU pride and then excursions to go places in the city. You pick a group and go do different activities (I saw Knocked Up).

-Thurs.
SA Meeting and Stuff Before- Useless congratulations ceremony. Also get into your Student Adviser Group...
BUWA, which, if you wrote you BU college essays by yourself, you should have no trouble with. 99.9% of the people get placed in WR100 which sucks, because, as you'll notice, all interesting classes are WR150. Actually a new friend and I were talking about it and decided that BU professors (who grade the BUWA) prefer a specific writing style and most people don't have it. If you're determined to get WR150, you'd be well of talking with an older friend who took WR100 and reading over on of his/her essays.
Game Show: Corny quiz thingy. Volunteer if you want a prize. Basic questions that don't really teach anything.
BU ID/Safety Lectures: As most lectures, these were boring. You learn about safety at schools, about not being racist, about not drinking, and stuff.
Registration for Courses is split out throughout the day. They explain it pretty well, so don't worry about not having anything planned in advance, I didn't...
Sketch comedy/GSU thing are both fun events. The SAs do a good skit which is amusing. You can tell they put the effort into it, and it's rather entertaining. Oh and I recommend you sit in front, because otherwise, you'll have a hell of a hard time hearing... Then you have different options of stuff to do (ie. movies, comedians, etc). It's fun-ish.

-Fri.
I really didn't do anything. One major thing is the getting the Terrier Cards, which, I actually wasn't able to do because I didn't have a government issued picture ID. It totally sucked. My permit didn't have a picture+I was the only kid there without a license... With hindsight, I would have brought my passport. Then, I sorta got separated from my group, but from what I understand, there's another brief lecture on technology at your school, you get a printed copy of your schedule, and you go to the goodbye ceremony (which a friend and I skipped to have lunch with a cute girl [which actually didn't go to well]).

Oh and you do get roommates and it is kinda random, but you don't spend too much time with them. I didn't see mine most of the time. Oh and there will be game room downstairs; play a game of pool when you have a chance, it'll help make friends and it beats sitting in your room by yourself...

**
x_tiddlywink**: I'm in SMG too! You weren't in Group 81, were you?

And most of the people I spoke with graduated. :( I'm waiting until the 21st...

-The Shuddering Coot66

hey... i was in group 81... that's almost scary haha who are you?

Thanks for the detailed reply coot, really appreciate it. I actually don't have a permit or a license or anything either so I guess I'll be bringing my passport. So you leave orientation with a copy of your schedule for the fall?, sounds pretty cool. So how's your schedule looking?

You can fiddle with your schedule the rest of the summer.

If you are going to a session later in June or July, I guarantee Rich Hall will be hotter. It's not summer yet.

wow...seems like yesterday i was at my orientation..haha
most chances are you wont ever talk to you orientation roommate during the school year, maybe run into them at a party or something...good luck to all you incoming freshmen...btw. Warren Towers WILL get on your nerves...i guarantee it

x_tiddlywink: I'm the guy from CT... I was rather quiet throughout most of orientation. I wore a UBS cap yesterday…Who are you?

**odin64x: **My schedule looks OK. I'm still ticked off that I had to sign up for WR100 class (being Ukrainian, I signed up for a Russian Literature Course). Also, the philosophy course I wanted to take (Politics and Philosophy) was only available second semester, so I signed up for Intro to Ethics instead. Microeconomic and Management 121 are both required, and thus my schedule was full...

djkim253: Good thing I signed up for Towers as my first choice, right?

-The Ticking Coot66

haha, are you incoming freshman?...haha good luck, freshman usually never get what they want and are like 92% guaranteed to be shoved into either west or warren, dont get me wrong, warren and west are AMAZING places to meet new people and friends, just the quality of everything sucks...haha good luck with your freshman year if any of you have questions feel free to get back at me, i just finished my freshman year so ill be more than happy to help in that area.

question...did ur parents go with u to the orientation? if not where did u see the other parents who did come stay? im worried about my parents because they're so reserved that they're better off not coming...any info would be appreciated.

The parents stay in the student village. It's super nice.

Session 2 baby :)

i'm going to session 2! just a few more days...

im going to session 7...hahah
