Setting structure a part

I've written my essay for the common app (on an ethical dilemma) and I think I've written it to be pretty interesting. But I'm wondering if the way I did it is interesting, and if it's appropriate. It starts by putting the reader in the situation at the moment I made a decision, like you're reading a book about it. It's only like this for a few lines, and then it goes to the normal essay format where I explain what I was facing, and how it has impacted me.

I'm now wondering if it is appropriate to write that way for a college essay? What do you guys think? If you need to see it to understand what I'm talking about, PM me and I'll send you just that section. Thanks!
