does it bother anyone else that TCNJ is completely isolated? there's not town or stores for students to go to

Anyone who goes to TCNJ- are there any major issues with not having access to a town/restaurants esspecially during the first year when students can't have cars?

There's a loop bus every Tuesday and Friday night that takes freshmen to nearby malls, movies, restaurants etc. There is a lot of things going on during the week so I have yet to hear anyone complain about TCNJ being too isolated! It definitely does not bother me, I'm a freshman and I absolutely love it here :)

Yeah that's what I've heard from almost everyone. I haven't heard of almost anyone who doesn't like TCNJ

When kids want to shop or do something fun, seems they come back home. We see TCNJ kids at our HS events alot or around town on weekends. They say it's convenient to come home on weekends - even coming home for dr appts, family stuff. My college age kid is 5 hrs away and only comes home on breaks so I'd kind of like if she was able to pop home - but some of these kids say that they come home coz most of their friends go home too and they don't want to be left alone at school. I doubt that's true coz not everyone goes home but they probably feel like that because their close friends are gone. Think even the cafeterias reflect this though - not all are open on the weekends coz not as many kids around... bet it's true for all NJ state schools since no one is very far from home.

My DD dated a guy from the TCNJ area for about a yr and there really isn't much to do there. But lots of rural schools are like that. Guess it depends on what you're looking for. Most kids seem happy just living away from home and "hanging out" especially since they're on limited budgets and can't afford to go out all the time. Not too far from the shore or Phili or NY for a change of pace. Plenty of kids have cars. That's how they get home so easily.

Personally, I thought it was a huge problem freshmen year when I didn't have a car on campus. I only took the Loop once, and it abandoned me and a friend at the local mall and we had to call our CA to come pick us up...it was not fun. So yeah, after that I didn't take the Loop.

It's not that there isn't much to do at TCNJ, it's that at times there is literally nothing to do. The college does hold some events on weekends, and occasionally they are succesful (like when they bring in big name comedians or musicians), but generally not many people attend these events. They also show movies in the freshmen dorms which can be fun, but again are not generally well attended. The main social activity on the weekends comes from off-campus frat parties. If that isn't your scene then there aren't too many other options. A lot of people will just hang out in their rooms or with some friends watching a movie or whatever. I'm not saying this to discourage people in any way from coming to TCNJ, I have had a great time here and I'm happy I decided to come here, but I think TCNJ tries to tell people that the atmosphere is quite a bit different than it actually is. The social options do improve, I think, as an upperclassman when you can drive to princeton or even philly or new york for the day or night. More upperclassman also stay on campus or around campus, as they get more involved with the school and less attached to home.

But that no car freshman year rule really sucks.
