I want to become a doctor. What would help me more in the long run in terms of residencies, fellowships, etc.: a seven year Med program at TCNJ, or a highly ranked university such as Johns Hopkins or UPenn?
If you are absolutely determined and capable to be a Physician, the TCNJ 7 year program trumps any top tier university. At the end of the day, there is little difference between a doctor graduated from Harvard or Rutgers.
Sorry @artloversplus but this is blatantly wrong. Though their are many benefits to BS/MD Programs (which is why I’m applying to them ), they don’t “trump any top tier university” undergrad or med school.
As long as you certain that you can get into med school through compiling solid stats and MCAT scores, you would probably be better off in the long run just getting into a top/decent undergrad and applying to mid to high tier medical schools. Just look at the residency match lists and placement lists and it’s extremely obvious. Not every med school is the same when it comes to getting students to specialize, just look at NJMS vs. Harvard Medical School.
No doubt, the primary BS/MD attraction factor is that the rates of acceptance are much higher and more likely than compared to regular med school admissions.
However, to label their to be “little difference” between a doctor from a top and average med school is an overgeneralization, and if you are determined to become a Physician and have the drive to succeed at a top notch school, you would probably be better off going the traditional undergrad route and trying to get into a top med school.
It’s not so obvious as residency matches are done by a computer program. Although certainly not inclusive of all residency programs, according to 2017 applicant and residency program directors (PDs) surveys below, on the one hand PDs who answered survey considered applicants med school performance and fit with program top factors, if an applicant went to top school was a less important factor in minds of responding PDs; on the other hand applicants who answered survey were most concerned with the location of the desired residency, fit with program second most important.

also I forgot to add that the computer program is set up to favor the applicant
@mom2collegekids, would you please come set these people straight?!
