Seventeen Freshman 15-guide me?? :)

Hey,so I posted this on the high school topics board, but I figured that I could also get some quality advice from the rice board. Thanks in advance!!!! :)

So I know that most of the people who use this website are wayyy too busy to fool around with shenanigans like Seventeen Magazine, but I think that you all from the high school board (parents/college kids/HS kids alike) would be the best people to ask.

You may be familiar with a program called "The Freshman 15" on Seventeen's website and in their magazine. Basically, the people at the magazine pick a variety of girls (different races and personalities) attending different types of schools (big state, small LAC, ivy, top 20). Then, the 15 freshman girls have to vlog/blog/give tips/answer questions during their freshman year experience in order to provide advice to those planning to enter college.

I was lucky enough to be picked, so I have the opportunity to document my freshman year chronicles in a magazine.

Seeing as my job is to give advice and expose the college experience to high school students, I wanted to ask about what I should highlight. So if you're familiar with the program, or even if you're not (if you're a guy haha), what should I talk about specifically? Most importantly, what should be done differently than in previous years of the Freshman 15? Are there any particular concerns with college life (that have yet to be addressed in the program at length) that I should look into?

I'm going to be attending Rice University in a little over a week (ahh!), and so my experience particularly pertains to the types of people who use this website. If there's anything at Rice that I should highlight, let me know =]

I've used this website so much the past two years, and hopefully I can give back the "advice karma" through this magazine/internet media that is Seventeen magazine. If you have any suggestions for what would be best for me to cover during my experience, let me know!!

I just have a feeling you won’t need a speck of advice from anyone! Oh, to be a Rice freshman and have a popular magazine waiting for your impressions!

I certainly wouldn’t miss a single dessert at Ruggles in Rice Village. And so much to write about during O-Week and all that you’ll see – finding out how accessible the profs are – the feel of the campus – late night chats with new friends – everything going on in your residential college … Fondren … the commons … the new gym … the music coming out of Shepherd School of Music … This is like giving advice on how to eat a hot fudge sundae, RaeBanging!

Congratulations on being selected for this! I don’t have anything to suggest. I’m sure you’ll find plenty to blog about, from o-week on. Good luck!

Thanks ottoline and berkeleymom, I suppose my question is more about what to focus on,since I have a lot of options and I’d like to know what the public would be likely to be most interested in :)

I definitely think that out of all the college-related information I have read these past few years, one thing that is seldom touched upon is food. What about the average college student at a small institution that has to eat at the dining hall most days, or the one who prepares their own meals- what of their stuggles/triumphs? How much time exactly do busy students have to eat? Is on-the-go food more conducive to the freshman 15? If you could really give some insight into what Rice students eat and the experiences that they share with others while dining, that would be awesome =]

Don’t make rice look bad… I don’t want any bad publicity, I like it the way it is.

Congrats!! Send us (post) the info to get to the blog. You cant post a link, but can tell us how to find it!

awesome. Id say just roll with it. pretend you arent reviewing it and go with the flow. You take off on move in day and fly around all week in a whirlwind of crazy awesomeness. Just experience it and write hoe YOU felt.

everyone experiences it differently, so hope you have a blast

Congratulations! I don’t have much to add, but let it happen - I’m sure the topics will just present themselves to you as they come up. (and maybe address some of the emotional issues, too. Does the school feel like home to you and how do you make a school feel like home? How do you handle roommate issues and homesickness? What are the most liberating aspects of being at college?) :)

Those are great ideas, anxiousmom, and could lead to some invaluable pointers for freshmen and prospective freshmen everywhere.

(And speaking of homey, I hope our rising freshmen are bringing familiar touches to warm up their rooms – quilts, pillows, stuffed animals, pictures, mementoes, signed t-shirts, etc.)

RaeBanging, it might be interesting to write about looking for comfortable niches to study in – what works and what doesn’t. About how certain pre-conceptions of Rice changed after you moved in … about how you stay in balance.

It’s the little things, the details that will make it all come to life.

Alright, so here it goes, I’m entirely giving away my identity, which goes against the cardinal rule of the internet. I suppose I signed up for the online spotlight when I took the job anyway.

I know people wanted to read this blog to follow my Rice experiences - sooo here it is! Only my first post is up, but y’all should follow it and comment and make me feel loved and all. There will be videos within the next week or two, as well!

BTW - I’m posting this blog here because I know that people who come to this forum want to know about Rice. Soo for those getting to know Rice, use the blog as a resource if you so desire!

Wonderful, Rae - I’ll keep using your CC name! Thanks for sharing this with all the prospective students!

Can’t stop smiling! Seventeen was lucky to find you, Rae – and so is Rice!!!
