Several Questions:

What is Whitman known for?
What kind of students attend Whitman?
How diverse is the school? (ethnicity, political leanings, etc.)
How is creative writing and biology at Whitman?
How would one compare Whitman to Reed?

As the parent of a Whitman student, I can offer you my impressions and what I've heard from my student, faculty, staff, etc. Whitman is known for being an academically rigorous liberal arts college with a very strong sense of community. It is one of the top LACs on the west coast. It attracts a student body that is smart, interested in learning, talented, down to earth and often athletic and/or outdoorsy. Students have a wide range of interests, from the arts to community service to politics, and each one generally seems to be actively engaged in at least a couple of these at any given time. The school is working hard on increasing ethnic diversity, which seems to be happening slowly. Although the students as a whole are left leaning, all opinions are respected. I do not know anything about the individual departments in which you are interested, but have heard good things in general about the sciences, especially the opportunity to be involved in research with faculty. Not knowing Reed well, I can't really compare the two, but what I understand is that Reed students are more focused on academics and less on extracurricular involvement. From a parent's perspective, I think that Whitman is a wonderful school with a very dedicated and caring faculty and staff that provides a very well rounded and rigorous liberal arts education. As with all schools, though, it's in the eye of the beholder and nothing says it as much as a visit. Hope this helps.
