Yes, you can apply with an easier major then change later. It isn’t a bad idea if you keep your grades up so that you can transfer internally, but you are taking a chance.

Personally, I think doing an internal transfer will be more tough than going to a community college for an year and then transferring to UT, considering you’re not in top 10% of high school. There are many people at UT just waiting and waiting to do an internal transfer to McCombs and many fail because of bad professor & grades in a few classes. I was denied to UT McCombs and accepted to Liberal Arts in my senior year. Since I really wanted in McCombs, I knew I would have to pull around a 3.6+ to do an internal transfer and close to a 4.0 for an external. I went to a CC, took all 5 indicator courses (Calculus I, Calculus II, Micro Econ, Macro Econ, BCIS 1305) and came out with a 3.9 and was accepted (did had 1 good recommendation, a good resume, mild essays not so superb) but GPA was the deciding factor, especially when they say I mad a big jump from not being in Top 10% of high school to a 3.9/4.0. That is my opinion/experience but the decision is up to you. Good luck

thanks for the replies. this may be a dumb question but do we tell them what we plan on majoring in on the application? and if i choose to major in math, will that make it harder for me to get in?

one word: lul or bump

Math might make it easier for you to get in since most students don’t go into Math or Physics alone as a major. And yes, you tell them on the application your desired major so they can make a decision whether to accept you or not.

Instead of choosing a major like teaching or something else you may want to look at their General Studies program. With this you will take your core classes freshman year and can wait to declare a major until then, and at that time you would use the same system of transfering to a new major as you would with any other major.

Also, i am not 100% sure on this but i know it is true at A&M, admission into the university and your major are two seperate processes. The University admissions will look at your application and either accept or deny you into the university and this garuntees you to go into general studies. Then you can put your desired major (the one you really want not the easier one) like Buisness or some type of engineering if you get it then good, but if not they should automattically put you in to General Studies.
