As a parent of a non-sport applicant, I found it off-putting…we have visited several times, and sports were not mentioned. My daughter attends a sports heavy high school and had chosen Sewanee as her first choice because it didn’t seem so sports heavy, but after that call, she has changed her mind. She at least thought they would give a decision date.
Preppypaisley21: The reason I added my comment was to emphasize that although 1 counselor (Jeff) pushed athletics, the others were more focused on student involvement in the academic community as a whole. I’ve spoke with Lisa Burns about my D and she was genuinely interested in why she wanted to attend and how she can add to their community.
Everything I have heard about the school is that it is a tight knit environment. I do not think your child should be discouraged. I would recommend she reach out to Lisa and ask to be connected with a few students she can talk to.
BTW… what other schools is your D considering? What is she looking to study?
Denison, Oberlin, Rhodes, Miami (Ohio), Wash U (Reach), Tulane
wait so they compare applicants to current students? or am I reading that wrong?
They just said, I read an application and think this person reminds me of Sally. I think this person would be a good fit for Sewanee. My daughter thought that it was an odd statement. I think she was just disappointed with the whole zoom meeting as it was her first choice, and what they emphasized just wasn’t what her idea of Sewanee was.
that is disappointing Was the general vibe of the zoom just not what she was looking for? I am kinda iffy about Sewanee. However, I am a legacy and most of my family attended there. they all had great experiences and never stop talking about Sewanee haha. It seems like most people who go either absolutely LOVE it or dont have a great experience and transfer.
Wait. Has she visited any of these schools ? Trying to get a read on what exactly is important to her as these are vastly different from each other beyond the obvious. The appeal of each is quite distinct & in contrast to each other in some cases, The only ones we have not visited in last few yrs are Oberlin (my kids felt it too small and artsy vibe was not their thing) and Rhodes (lovely in so many respects but had zero interest in being right in Memphis). The remaining schools could not be more different from each other - which may not come through in virtual experiences. Wash U is essentially ivy/UofC/Northwesten/Vandy level outlier stretch for even the most accomplished & each of the others has their niche. Miami is much bigger than the rest, just a different animal, uber greek, etc etc. but still great outcome potential. Does she have connections w current students at any of these ? Assume u live in OH. I hope campus visits are able to happen in a meaningful way this spring !
Yes. She has visited. She has done several writer workshops/summer programs at these universities. She has relationships with some of the faculty. That is why she chose them. She is aware Wash U is a reach. She has also applied to some State schools but had pretty much made up her mind about Sewanee. She has cast a wide net.
Sounds like a good plan and she would be happy in a variety of environments Glad to hear she has had the benefit of those touch points & research because it is an eclectic mix of schools which is lovely ! Fingers crossed for Spring to open up a bit everywhere. …
I’m hearing that EA decisions may be released today.
Anyone know around what time they normally release decisions
