does anyone else find it a little disconcerting that yale student activity dollars go towards supporting a week of lectures like "The History of the Vibrator", "Sex Toys 101", a "Porn Party" and a porn star for the keynote adress?

I read about it in some other college book.....quite disturbing to say the least......higher education is going to the dogs......(talking about the all the porn magazines.....)

I do find it disconcerting. Ha, and to think, the only other school I am considering besides Yale is Wheaton (IL), which is a conservative Christian school (not much sex ;)). It probably won't deter me from eventually choosing Yale though.

Yeah, it does seem a little weird, but I'm sure a lot of people find it fun and interesting. Yale isn't really at a deficit in money... what would you rather the money go toward? Lectures on "The History of Broomball," "Broomball 101," etc.? I think there are stupider ways to spend that money. Sex week might actually be fun... maybe Safiamilke and I just the crazy ones here...?

What do you mean "show some respect for human sexuality"?

First, that makes no sense, seeing as it's their goal to show some respect for it by delving deeper into it and educating others during Sex Week.

Second, there are tons of formal credit-bearing courses devoted to studying human sexuality at Yale, and other ivies. They don't really have anything to "live up to" in terms of respect for human sexuality.

And you're not boring. You just have a boring opinion. JK :)

Hmm.. I think what MzLover was talking about was she was concerned that they were cheapening sex (this is what I believe pornography, etc does). Sex is a great thing, but imho, it should be saved as a special bond between the person one marries.

Ok, that's true. I agree then. Remind me to never join a debate team... I give in too quickly.

EDIT: ohh I didn't mean to agree to the marriage part... I didn't see that little detail. Marriage eww yuck. I'm agreeing to the cheapening of sex.

Yeah, it would be restricting, but I for one plan on waiting for sex, even if it means going through all of college not doing it. Although, this is probably easier said than done.

I might pay a visit to yale during this "sex week." That's awesome - i'd love to hear lectures (and see 'professors' keep straight faces) on the history of the vibrator and dildo or different sex positions

Harvard taught a class last year on the history of masturbation, led by Stephen Greenblatt, humanities professor, who also wrote a review on the book called Solitary Sex for the New York Review of Books.

newt, did you ever see that PBS special on Wheaton College and the controversy broiling within the campus as students tried to reconcile creationism with evolution? It was really interesting...hehe...I was almost enticed to attend Wheaton.

No, I didn't see it... is there a link online like that old link to the video on Amherst Admissions from PBS? I'd like to see it :). It's a good school, just a bit too close to home (I live there).
