SFS acceptees

I was deferred, but iw as wondering if those of you that got into SFS early action could post what you wrote about in your global issues essay.

Beslan and Chechnya

transgenic crops/genetically-modified food regulations, and how that tied into my summer research project ( i applied for the science and international relations major)

I wrote about the land distribution problems and famine in Zimbabwe, and how they are caused by corrupt elections. I tied it in with America's presidential election, because my app was sent right around that time.

^damn liberal

:)

Why ratification of the kyoto protocal is a necessary, though costly, political move.

LOL.. Babybird.. They were out to defer conservatives this round.. but as the Governator says.. "We'll be back."

I noticed that too. Babybird, tlaktan and pixiedancer were all conservatives and all got deferred! I managed to get in though, and I'm a conservative :)

I wrote about the rapidly declining power and relevance of the United Nations

How personal were your guys' global issue essays? Mine related how Wal-Mart and other coporate conglomerates are exploiting overseas labor and how Wal-Mart et al's very low prices, as a result of cheap production costs, are hurting small town America, including my parents who own and operate their own Main St. business. I thought I did a nice tie-in about how international economic conditions (I applied as an Int'l Econ major) are affecting small town America. (I was deferred, by the way)

manderz i chose the same topic.....though i don't think i wrote about it that well.

how did you approach it?

i was accepted EA to SFS and i wrote about the Sudanese Genocide and how ppl are starting to ignore it just like they did Rwanda and that the US cant really do anything about it b/c we're too tied up in Iraq, no one's listening to Powell (this was b4 he resigned), and we've lost our international leadership position b/c of Iraq, etc.

.....it was kind of opinionated and very anti-Bush-administration at first (w/o naming him specifically), but i toned it down a little b4 i sent it...still pretty opinionated tho, but i figured it would be okay cuz they wanted you to write about something about which you felt strongly.

i specifically did not include any political comments in my SFS essay to avoid offending anyone (my views on the Bush administration are not what one would call sympathetic). instead, i tried to make my essay as personal as possible without getting political. i wrote about the issue of poverty in peru, since i visited last summer. i talked about how i met this 10 year old girl who was begging for money and looking after her brother and sister. the day i met her was my brothers 10th birthday, and i wrote about how different their lives are and how the issue of poverty needs to be addressed. i didn't even mention US involvement. instead, i talked about how the peruvian government needs to channel more money to the educational system and make it truly public.

I avoided all political comments in mine as well. I used Bush once as a quote and not as attacking.

I figured, you're applying to a school that teaches diplomacy- might as well show 'em you can be diplomatic!
