SFS Essays? (General or Specific)

I was wondering about what some of you SFS hopefuls wrote. Were you guys specific in choosing an international issue (i.e. Darfur or China) or were you more general in scope? For example I didn't pick a particular world crisis but instead talked about cultural ignorance.

Thoughts?

I wrote about the olympics in Beijing, and how the U.S. should consider a boycott because originally China promised to improve its human rights record so that it could get the games, but actually it's only gotten worse. Pretty specific, I guess.

We'll see how good it really was come Saturday...

I wrote about opium cultivation/eradication in Afghanistan and how it affects the "War on Terror." Dunno if the adcomms will like it but I felt good about it.

Idk if they wanted something specific or more general...if they wanted specific they should have made it really clear, b/c I bet a lot people picked broad issues.

I wrote about AIDS and its recent rise in the South esp. in urban areas like Atlanta. I kinda brought up things with Africa and things like that.

Again, I didn't know about being too specific or whatever. I tried to incorporate plenty of examples in it. I liked it and so did my editor person so I was happy. ANyone else?

I wrote about illegal immigration, I was able to make it personal as I worked somewhere where the majority of my co-workers were illegals. Came out good with that personal touch.

backdoor arms trade to hr abusers

i wrote about russia BEFORE it became a hot issue.

ecapp, the same thing happenned to me. I wrote about Burma (Myanmar) in early September, a week before the situation exploded. I'm not sure if that is going to help me or hurt me. I guess we'll see on Saturday.

i hope you dated your essay then haha. but go us!

Yeah...I wrote a note at the bottom saying "finished september 3- I understand it is a developing situation/ cannot keep updating it, etc.) haha we shall see what happens!

I wrote about the Taiwan-China issue and how a future democratic Taiwan will help to stop China's support for rogue states. Wrote it about 3 months before the Congressional report came out which basically restated all my points in the essay. I wonder if some Georgetown prof. took my essay and used it as testimony =P

China's 'arsenal' spurs warnings - - The Washington Times, America's Newspaper

i wrote about the danger of nationalism as globalization exapnds and the rise of multi-national organizations
so i guess i was general

I guess mine was pretty specific. I wrote about Japan's conflict with China and South Korea over the Yasukuni Shrine thing.

i wrote about the shia crescent

mine was both general and specific. it was about a specific problem (human trafficking and modern-day slavery), but i kept it in the global scope instead of delving deeply into one specific form of slavery (ie sex trafficking in southeast Asia or cocoa slaves in west Africa)

i wrote about how lack of education is the root of poverty/malnutrition in Africa...kind of pulled it out of thin air one afternoon....don't know if it will help me....

i'm pretty sure Taiwan is democratically governed right now... and it is independent in pretty much all but name/world recognition. But yeah, that's still a pressing issue, as China disagrees...

Anyway, I wrote about American ignorance, education, and specifically, literacy in Africa

Mine was a satire.. like A Modest Proposal by j.swift.... but i wrote it on racism..
i hope they dont find it too offensive/jocular

falala, I know the ROC is democratic as of now. I was referring to its political status in the future as the PRC's aggressive stance threatens its present form of government.

mine was a bout water related diseases and scarcity.. it was pretty specific and organized
