SFS or College?

Hello,

I'm a rising senior and I was hoping you could help me to make an application decision. Ideally I would like to pursue a career either as an elected official or in the State Department. I am average in Foreign Language but I excel in AP Government, IB Economics, and IB Philosophy. Which school would be better for me? Also, which school would look better on an application to the GPPI?

You can change from one college to the other, so it is not the end of the world if start in one, and end up preferring the other. However, I have heard it is harder to change from COL to SFS than to change from SFS to COL (not sure if this is true). Also, I think it is a bit harder to get into SFS, and if you don’t get in, they don’t then see you there is room in COL for you. Also, if you change your mind in COL, there are sure a lot more majors to choose from. Therefore, I woudn’t apply to SFS unless I was pretty sure that was what I wanted to do. But if looks like your dream college, apply away.

The SFS is highly specialized but allows a great deal of flexibility in pursuing your academic interests. You should know that the SFS foreign language monkey would constantly be on your back due to the language proficiency exam that you must pass (in order to graduate from the program). If you find foreign languages a challenge, you should read the BSFS language requirements for graduation so you know exactly what you would be getting yourself into.

It is a hard decision because both the SFS and College offer a lot of great programs/majors from which to choose.
