Hey,
I'm applying to the SFS and I love IR, but looking at my ECs, it's not that apparent. I spend so much time reading international news, all the books i read and movies I watch take place in foreign countries and I just love learning about differet cultures. But I'm not in MUN or anything, and no youth government or anything like that. Pretty much all I have done that you would put on an app is that I got to go on a Rotary exchange to Spain this past summer and I am in a "Safe Darfur" organization.

Do you think this would hurt me in admissions?

I wouldnt worry about it. My son was accepted to SFS two years ago and had absolutely no ECs related to politics or IR. Just be sure to write a thoughtful, well-supported essay for SFS and that way your IR interest will be evident. Best of luck to you!

Just make sure that you know IR is really what you want to do. There is a difference from being extremely well read and up-to-date on the news and making this your life. I know several people this year who thought it was really what they wanted to do and realized otherwise when they got here.

I haven't really been able to test being a diplomat or anything, but I loved living somewhere else for a month! I'm not 100% sure, of course, but pretty close. And I think even if I didn't actually go into the Foreign service, like I want to now, it would be a helpful background in other areas.

There are very few people within the SFS that I've met that actually aspire to be in the foreign service, as far as I know...a lot of people are hoping to work for the UN, NGOs, or in the private sector...not to mention those who want to go on to law and grad school.
