sfs vs college

I am a student in the SFS, and I can tell you guys that the feeling on campus is that the SFS is better. I was at a dinner with a leading IR scholar from MIT, and I asked him about how outsiders regard different majors within SFS. He said that it doesn't matter which major you pick, as long as you are in Walsh. He referred to the prestige of "the SFS brand" within the field. Basically, kids from the College are so defensive for a reason. Though admissions statistics may go up and down slightly every year, the feeling that the SFS is superior is implanted in the minds of many. The College has a lot of great things to offer. If you want to be a bio or Arabic major, the College is best for you. Overall, though, the SFS is what makes Georgetown unique.

I'm a student at Georgetown, too, and I can tell you that no such feeling exists. In fact, I don't feel much competition between the schools at all on a daily basis. All of my friends are from different schools and we all recognize and respect that we are simply studying different things.

Maybe this idea is implanted in your mind, but the numbers speak for themselves. The College has a lower acceptance rate and a higher overall GPA. The SFS name only carries more weight in the field of politics and international relations.

Maybe the SFS is what makes Georgetown unique, but it's now what makes it a top school. The College was the first school at Georgetown and it is the biggest. This means that the schools history is based around the College, and that most Georgetown alumni are graduates of the College. The College has been around since 1789, the SFS since 1919- clearly one has already stood the test of time.

Wait, what?

I must have missed the memo from the SFS Academic Council or Deans' Office saying that we were superior to every other school in Georgetown.

Think about the phrase, "We Are Georgetown" for a second. Not "We are the SFS" or "We are the College", etc. As much as I jokingly tease my Business School, College, and NHS friends about the "superiority" of the SFS, I respect everyone equally, regardless of academic field. I could care less if you were a French major, an International Business major, an International Health major, or an IPOL major. It really doesn't matter. Anyone who seriously thinks the SFS is superior to the other schools and consequently gets arrogant about it should seriously rethink the words coming out of their mouth. (Yes, I butchered pronoun use, deal with it.)

Certainly, the SFS is better than many of the undergraduate International Relations programs out there, but to say one Georgetown school is better than the other is comparing apples, oranges, grapes, and strawberries. It simply doesn't make sense.
