Well it's college app season... I've been really anxious about applying! My top school is SFSU and USF, if I got into either one I would be so happy. But I really want to know if I could really get into these schools? I feel like there's something about them that they are looking for so I've been kinda nervous for the last couple of days.

So...

My unweighted GPA is 3.5 / weighted GPA 3.7; I'm planning to graduate at high honors. With my classes now, I will take 9 AP classes in total. I took my SAT cold and got a 1570 but plan to take it again next week. I also took my ACT cold and got a 21, but plan to retake it this month. I had 3 C's in total during my soph - junior year. I'm mostly an A and B student, but I had to be hospitalized for depression/suicide on multiple occasions which took me away from school.. hopefully I can express that in the EOP part for the Cal State, although I am kinda embarrassed to mention it. I don't want to think I'm going to harm myself in my dorm or something... I am past that and have recovered.

EC include 1000+ community service hours at an aquarium where I earned two leadership roles in the last 4 years. I was involved in my Catholic church for about 4 years. On campus, I was involved in many clubs, and I have a leadership role in each of them. I know that Cal States don't care about that, but it's worth a shot to mention.

I also live like 5 minutes away from Cal State Long Beach so I don't know if that would turn SFSU away... I never could relate to anyone at my school and mostly everyone is going there.. What drew me into SFSU is that it reminds me of where I live but could offer an education without the distractions I have here. I've talked to people that go there and say they love it. I also talked to one of the people being their Outreach Programs and the school seemed like the right fit.

I want to be a social worker and major in Psych while I'm there btw!

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help! It's appreciated :)

Keep in mind a ton of people go for psych but with that in mind with your test scores rn
SFSU-high match
SFU-low reach

Your grades are fine for these schools and your ec’s for SFU is enough and you probably have a great story. but CSU’s don’t care about that and it is purely on numbers. Your classes are tough but your test scores are really low. Practice hard for it and once you get 1800+ you should be good to go!

Chance me back?

thanks for the feedback! @catseverywhere

^ Forgot to add that I am a first generation and I have a single mom who makes way less than $20,000 a year. I work part time as well. I literally was FORCED to get a job 2 months after I turned 16 in order to pay for anything my siblings and I wanted (new clothes or shoes, food, money to go out and socialize with friends). I started working in the same fast food restaurant as my mother (who is a shift leader) and I immediately hated it. I was also in and out of mental hospitals for depression… which something I hate admitting. Currently I am in talk therapy for my depression and a psychiatrist that I meet each month.

Everything that I mentioned gave me a perspective that a college education was necessary.

It’s all embarrassing to state, but apparently this will help me get in? Should I limit the amount I say because it would turn away colleges from thinking I’ll ever do any good in their school? All of it isn’t exaggerated and 100% true… Can someone clarify?

Low income and first generation will help. If you state anything about some mental issues, do not make it a sob story. It might be better if your GC addressed this issue.

^ thanks:)

Anyone else have any feedback? I will chance you back.
