SFSU vs Cal Poly vs Hofstra

Hi everyone. So I got accepted to three schools, San Fransisco State, Cal Poly SLO, and Hofstra. I'm planning on majoring in pre-med and going to medical school. I was wondering if anyone has any input on which school has the best pre-med program. I was also wondering if it is easier to go to medical from a private university or a public university.

Generally, you don’t “major in pre-med”. You major in whatever you want while taking pre-med course requirements.

Many pre-med students major in biology because that covers the pre-med courses, but that is not required for medical school – you can take the pre-med courses alongside any major (including majors like math, humanities majors, social studies majors, even engineering, though engineering may be hard to squeeze pre-med courses around). Note that biology has poor job and career prospects at the bachelor’s level – and most pre-meds do not get into any medical school.

So you may want to major in something that suits your other academic and professional interests, and which will satisfy (in both academic and career sense) you even if you do not get into medical school.

Consider whether each school has the academics and majors that you are interested in, and how good they are. And consider net cost after non-loan financial aid – if you go to (expensive) medical school, you probably do not want to be dragging along a lot of student loan debt from undergraduate studies.

ucbalumnus made a great post.

public vs private has no bearing, so don’t give that a second thought.

Go Cal Poly over SFSU. You will have a better undergrad experience, lower cost of living and likely much better education. Cal Poly is viewed on par with some UC’s. SFSU is a commuter school without a lot of community feel. There are, of course, some very good teachers, as at any Cal State.

Sorry, not familiar with Hofstra.
