SFSU vs UNLV. HELP PLEASE :(..

Hello everyone. Here's a little background: I live in the Bay Area in California.
I plan on majoring in the field of Hospitality and Hotel Management.

I don't know which school I should go to: SFSU or UNLV.

I like SFSU's social and campus life and the weather is a major plus. I just don't want to stay so close to home :\
Also, my financial aid would be able to help cover the cost.

UNLV is a huge hospitality and hotel industry and I've read how it's in the Top 5 in the nation, but campus life is dead, and desert weather (90+ degrees all the time)
I doubt financial aid will help cover the out of state tuition cost. The Western Undergradute Exchange (WUE), if qualified would allow me to pay the in-state tuition, but I wouldn't be able to find out if I got approved of that until the start of class registrations :(.. It would suck a lot to risk not going to SFSU to find out that I didn't get approved for WUE.

I have to decide ASAP before November 30th. As you can tell, I am in an iffy position.

PLEASE HELP.

Does WUE give you instate …or does it give you 150% of instate tuition?

From the WUE website…

*To calculate the WUE rate, multiply the institution’s resident tuition times 1.5; fees are additional. *

That would be 150% of the instate rate.

In-state tuition is about $6k per year, so 150% would be $9k per year.

If you qualify for Cal Grants, then you wouldn’t get those for an out of state school.

What FA do you qualify for?

If you need FA to pay for SFSU, then going to UNLV doesnt’ sound wise especially if you’re unsure what your tuition rate would be.

I realize it might be OK for hospitality, but I view UNLV as one of the worst public universities in the country. Nevada has a horrible educational system and all those poorly educated kids with terrible writing skills are landing at UNLV and UNR. The bright kids escape to Arizona.

@ mom2collegekids: Thank you so much for your feedback. That actually helped me leaned more towards SFSU. At first, I was leaning towards UNLV even with all the negative reviews it received.

But yes, you’re correct, it gives me 150% of instate tuition.

I’m not too sure which FA I’m going to receive but I’m from a low income family… :</p>

I was thinking of UNLV because of its prestigious hospitality program.

UNLV also requires out of state students to dorm which is about $12000. Omg… Would I be crazy if I still wanted to go there?

@ MomofWildChild: Just curious if you are from Nevada. I’ve read negative reviews on UNLV as well. But I don’t know why, but I still want to go there because of their prestigious Hospitality and Hotel Mgmt. program and how it’s ranked really high in the nation.

I don’t know too much about the program at SFSU but the tuition costs does make more sense to me since I live 40 minutes away and wouldn’t have to pay the crazy out of state costs.

This is tough :…

I’m not from Nevada, but I’ve spent some time there and have a lot of friends who have raised kids there. One kid is currently at UNLV. I’m not impressed.
