I'm currently at SJSU with hopes majoring in Animation. Last year, I applied to SJSU as a transfer student with Animation as my declared major; unfortunately, the GPA requirement for the program has been going up with it currently at 3.85. When i applied, it was at 3.7 while i had a 3.4 at the time. In May, I was admitted as an Undeclared student. I thought I would be able to change my major after the first semester.

When I attended orientation and talked to the animation advisors, they told me that their program is the only program not allowing any students to switch into nor take the prereqs. I think it was put onto effect at the end of spring but was never announced. The advisors said their protesting the dean to reconsider letting non-animation majors take the prerequisites so they could apply for the portfolio review. As of right now, it's all talk and one of the advisor I've been in contact with thinks it could be awhile until any changes happen.

I live in the Bay Area and know that SJSU has a great program with good connections in the industry. With the situation at SJSU, I'm thinking of transferring to SFSU. My question is what are people's thoughts in the animation program at sfsu? Does anyone know someone that's been in the program?

I’m in a similar situation. I’m applying there and going to try to switch into A/I, but it seems they’re becoming more and more strict with that program. I also hear classes are getting even more difficult to get into. All in all, things sound rough over at SJSU. How are you holding up? If I were you, I would raise HELL. You did NOT work all those years to get into SJ, just to transfer out. That A/I crisis is ridiculous and incredibly discouraging for the kids who’ve been planning to go there for years, or are in similar situations.

Okay, /rant.

Back to your question. I’ve heard good things about CSULB and CSUF. Haven’t checked out their student work yet though. I’ll try to get back to you if I get the chance to do some research on their alum/connections.

I have, however, checked out some videos from SFSU, and it seems… subpar (sorry if i’m being too blunt!). I also don’t like how SFSU doesn’t have a specific major for animation, just an emphasis. That means you’d probably want to go either Cinema with an emphasis in Animation, or Studio art with an emphasis in Animation. Neither are that appealing (to me), but hey, being near the city is a nice perk…
