SHA and CAS Admissions

I'm curious as to which is the more difficult school to get into stats-wise like average GPA, SAT scores.

I'm also interested in the course-load of each school in comparison to one another and if I decide to go for hotel administration, would taking pre-med classes like general chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics be a killer?

Thanks in advance for your input.

CAS is more for the general applicant, Hotel is more selective in that sense because they know what they’re looking for more often than not. CAS is definitely more open ended.

If you’re going to go into Hotel, 90% chance you probably won’t be taking most premed classes. Though a lot of CAS kids like to think that Hotel is a joke, most of my Hotel friends have a pretty long schedule and are pretty busy usually.

Plus if you’re going to go into hotel… I mean most likely you won’t be that committed to premed classes anyway…

thing is that i definitely want to become a doctor

i just want the hotel experience seems really interesting to me

…If you’re sure you want to become a doctor, apply CAS, or CALS, or maybe even Eng to a degree. Hotel is not going to be that beneficial and you won’t have time for the classes.

Yeah, I agree with Loller.

So I shouldn’t be a Business Major with Pre-Med Classes altogether?

I don’t think you could feasibly do HA and pre-med. The classes are vastly different and there are enough requirements already within the hotel school. I’ve also never heard of any hotelie that wanted to go to med school (I could be wrong).

You could be a business major and a pre-med, however, you should know that pre-med classes require quite a bit of work and dedication. You may be different, but I know plenty of people that are pretty busy with just pre-med classes. However, from what I’ve heard and experienced, AEM and econ classes aren’t that tough at an introductory level. I think that if you’re just “interested” in business classes but really want to be a doctor, then you should focus on just pre-med classes, because getting into medical school is tough enough these days.

hotelie here…

it is 100% impossible to do “pre med” in 4 years and graduate a hotelie. For hotel you essentially have 2.5 SOLID years of required courses (16 credits or so each semester) and in order to be pre med you have to fit in chem, orgo 1 and 2, physics, bio, etc ALL before the start of your senior year i believe.

it would mean taking 20+ credits every semester and taking like 8-10 credits each summer.

Oh I see.

Thanks for the great information everyone. CAS it is then!
