Shadowing a doctor

Hi guys next week I will start shadowing a surgeon at my local hospital to get a taste of what being a doctor is like. I want to become a doctor but am not 100% sure if it is what I actually want to do. So I am hoping this experience will help me with that decision before I choose to take pre-med classes in college (currently rising senior in high school). I know that he will be doing surgery while I am there, so is it appropriate to ask him questions about life as a doctor and why he went into medicine? I do not want him to be distracted. Also, I do not really know any medical terms or much about the human body currently, so will he think that I am not prepared? How do I show my passion for medicine?

How did you get to shadow a surgeon? I also would like to do that as well but I don’t know how.

I don’t think you should ask him what he’s doing while he’s performing surgery on someone. You might want to do that after. Also, just explain to him that you’re exploring your interests. He’ll understand if you don’t understand some medical terms.

@gingerspark99 I knew a physician at my local hospital and asked him if he would let me shadow him. I know that different hospitals have different policies of letting high school students shadow surgeons, because my friend wanted to shadow her mom at a different hospital but was not able to. Just try to reach out to a local surgeon by email, see if you have any connections to a doctor, or call your local hospital.
