Shadowing

What grade should you start shadowing a physician? I was thinking of starting the summer after junior year to help my college apps look better.

For college apps? I don't think it matters.

For med school, you won't be able to list that "accomplishment" unless you continue on through college. The AMCAS (med school primary app) explicitly asks for "Post-secondary Experiences" and you should limit yourself to only those things you did after graduating HS. That doesn't mean you can't talk about HS things in your interview or personal statement, just not on that application.

well i was hoping that shadowing was one of those activities that would make my college app shine, because I'm going into premed

Shadowing isn't an accomplishment. Nobody will ever be impressed that you shadowed. The point is that it's a useful way to make sure you know what you're talking about when you tell people you want to be a doctor. So medical schools will care, but I can't imagine colleges would.

And, remember, medical schools will only care about college work. So, basically, my guess is that for high school work, nobody cares.

It's a great thing to do, though.

thanks for the advice
