I have a small desktop and a laptop. Trying to decide which one to bring. I am only going to bring one. Thinking the laptop would be more versatile, but do many people take laptops to class and tote them around campus? Also, since I'm in a triple dorm room I was thinking my laptop would use up much less of my desk space.

Finally, does the UCLA network in the residence halls provide free anti-virus and firewall protection?

Either one is fine. Most people don't usually use their laptop during class, especially for math and science.

They provide free antivirus (Sophos) and is in fact mandatory unless you use another AV with Windows XP SP2. Firewall is not provided although anti-spyware is (Webroot).

You may consider Avast! or AVG for antivirus and ZoneAlarm for firewall. They're all good and free.

Bring a laptop, not a desktop. You're travelling from out-of-state, so it'll be much easier to carry all the way from home (and back). Most students have laptops now, but few actually bring them to class since they're used mainly as desktop replacements. A laptop will also give you more desk space since you're in a triple. Yes, UCLA provides Sophos Anti-Virus and Webroot Spy Sweeper for free download from any on-campus IP address.
