Sharing printer

I hear that roommates sometimes share a printer. How do they deal with the cost of ink and paper. I wouldn't be too concerned with a laser printer, especially of the roommate supplied her own paper. I think it would be dicier with an inkjet, especially if the roommates are printing unequal amounts. Do roommates who share keep a tally or drop a nickel in a can for each print? Or do most just work it out as they need ink and paper?

If they share, they work it out. Or they print to a university owned printer.

most schools give students a large amount to print for free each semester so cost isnt that much of an issue. generally, personal printers are just for those cases where you really need to print a last minute paper so the cost shouldn’t be too much.

I wouldn’t share.

And at my school there is no free printing.

i think its best that the roommate who owns it should take responsibility for it as a sign of good faith. you cant really keep track of how much ink the other roommate has used, and a lot of the time you dont even go through more than a cartridge a year. especially since a lot of classes are making most of their papers due online.

I’ll just say that if you and your roommate can’t trust each other enough to share a printer, you’ve got bigger problems.

I do not understand this obsession with being ‘required’ to share everything with your roommate.

If you need a printer you should buy your own printer. Relying on someone else, especially on things where someone is going to have to spend money, is a bad habit to get into.

My school doesn’t have free printing (in the library).

But in the secret computer labs, you’ll learn that you can print free there. But I think you have a certain, allotted amount.
