Sharing things

There's a lot of discussion about the need to contact your roommate to decide who brings what. What kind of stuff should you plan on sharing?

fridge, tv, video games, printer, stereo are things i can think of right away

wow...i could understand video games and stereo, but i was planning on bringing my own fridge, printer and tv (i'm not bringing a stereo anyway, just my mp3 player and computer).

Most dorms only have one TV jack....why bring your own printer? And do you really think you guys will have enough room for two fridges?

"And do you really think you guys will have enough room for two fridges?"

What about a triple room. You think one will still be enough?

Haha, well no, it would be pretty cramped. That sucks though.
I didn't know about the one tv jack.
I AM bringing my own printer - I've never heard of people sharing those(!!). I got a printer/copier/scanner (it's tiny!) with my laptop anyway.

One fridge for 3 people would be rough - you'd have to delegate space to each person. It would be do-able, if everyone left everyone else's stuff alone, but undesirable.

eh, if its tiny go for it....Im in a quad and bringing one fridge, decent size but anything that goes in will be eaten the next day most likely

Most of the dorms i've seen when i visited friends had two fridges for two people. THey stacked them on top of each other.

the little cube fridges or the slightly larger ones?

I'm in a triple. It's not just three people in one room; we have one room the size of a double and a single-size room and a bathroom.

This is what we're sharing:
~Two fridges
~One microwave
~A 20" TV (much smaller gets crowded with 3 people)
~Stereo
~Futon in the smaller room

We're putting all 3 beds in the big room (all are lofted) with the desks underneath and then the dressers and entertainment stuff is going in the small room.

"the little cube fridges or the slightly larger ones?"

oh, if you guys are thinking I was talking about little cube fridges...nah..im talking about the ones that are maybe half the size of a normal fridge

yeah, any ~4 ft3 fridge will be more than big enough for two or three people so long as it isnt always full of beer. in my experience people dont tend to use them for too much else, really. ice cream, fruit, yogurt, a few cans of soda... leftover pizza. thats more or less the extent of things.

on printers, go the safe route and DO NOT share. one person will invariably use more ink than the other, at which point the question of how much each should contribute for replacement will arise. it is a law of nature that the two sides will not agree... and that a big, bad fight will ensue.

Well with the one tv (coaxial, I assume) jack, you can always use a spliter...

and if you're in the same room, can you really watch two diff tv shows at the same time? Won't it be annoying?

If your school does not have a 24hr computer lab with printers, then don't go there. Or atleat 24hrs during exams or M-TH. Otherwise, you really don't need to bring your own printer, plus you will be paying a premium for ink, on campus. If you intend on stocking up, you will be using up valuable space inside your dorm room.

I don't know what I am sharing with my roomie yet, except for the fridge. We are definitely sharing that.

Okay, so nevermind. Apparently pword-protecting is not available on XP because I can't find it. I haven't done it since WIN 98.

What do you mean by pword protecting?

like on the welcome screen? that's easily done through the control panel.

Nah, back in 98 you could password protect a network printer.. aka your roommate and you could remotely print to the printer because it would be on the school's network.

I looked deeper into it and it's because I have XP Home and not Pro. If you have Pro you have to take off Simple Sharing or something. I would really like to be able to share my printer but have it protected, but oh well.
