is it possible to arrive several days early and see the dorm room.

I sure hope so. It’s pretty hard to buy furniture and such for a room you haven’t seen before. I wouldn’t want to buy a 4 cubic feet mini fridge just to realize it doesn’t fit.

[Tulane University - SHARP HALL](http://tulane.edu/studentaffairs/housing/under/sharp-hall.cfm)
Here is the website for Sharp with some photos and measurements in case it helps. As you can tell from the photos, there won’t be much room much for extra furniture. The only moveable items from what I understand are the desks- either under the window or against the wall as pictured. The closets have no doors, so if your S or D want to conceal the items in their closet, a spring rod and curtain or shower curtain can be hung across the opening. My son says he can’t be bothered with that and he doesn’t care if everyone sees his stuff. What a difference from moving a girl to college!

Technically, no, you are not allowed in the dorms until the designated move in day. The RAs and a few other people arrive early to set up and prepare though, so sometimes the desk worker may let you. In Sharp, you can’t move anything that’s in there, and the closet, bed, and desk are all in a row on either side of the room. What a lot of people do with the big fridges are set them in between the two desks and put their TV on top of that.

Actually, I believe the bed can usually be moved. A friend of mine whose roommate left partway through the year pushed the two beds together to form a king size.

Oh! That’s right! The beds CAN be moved. I totally forgot, but I had a friend that did that as well. Unless you’re the only one in the room, though, there’s really not space to move it anywhere.

You can risk breaking the rules. However, you have to accept the possibility they won’t let you in and you’ll need to rent a hotel room/hostel. I frankly think it is a little nuts, too. You have thousands of people moving in at once. The trucks are very organized, however, and the ROTC is great help.

Or do the freshman get to come sooner? I honestly can’t remember.

Freshman move-in starts at like 8 in the morning on Saturday, upperclassmen are not supposed to move in until something like 4 PM.

Actually FC, this year for some reason they are not letting upperclassmen move in until Sunday, August 28th. We are not happy about this as airfare is higher along with the fact that a gazillion kids are going to be calling for their boxes from Student storage or College boxes for the same time. Not alot of wiggle room on setting up your room, shopping for stuff you didnt want to ship from home and getting ready for classes bright and early Monday. They did offer an early move in if you choose to pay them an extra $150.00 bucks. I cannot figure out the thought process of this plan. DD was a freshman last year and I saw no visable problem with upperclassmen coming after 3pm. By then, she was busy with convocation and meetings.

You are very right spring162. I find this decision mysterious as well. Thanks for the correction though. With my D leaving for China in a week, I wasn’t aware of the change.

We have shelves that measure 7 ft tall, 3 ft wide and 1 ft in depth. Will it fit in a room in Sharp

Son is a sophomore moving into Paterson and has an airline ticket that gets him into New Orleans about 4 O’Clock Saturday afternoon. Housing has told him that he will be able to move into his room with no charge, as long as it is after 4.

That’s the way it always has been. Now that I think about it, I think they may have always formally stated that Sunday was the day for upperclassmen but that Saturday after 4 was always considered “the same thing”. Hard to remember for sure.

It is unfortunate that they didnt make the ability to come after 4pm on Saturday clear to the kids. They did state that upperclassman move in was Sunday with no mention that I saw of the ability to come late on Saturday. Too late now I guess. :(

Just wanted to report that we moved s into Sharp today and it went off without a hitch. I was very impressed with how organized everything was and s was very happy with his room situation. So far so good! it was very organized and the student move crew couldn’t have been nicer. Everyone from the resident advisor to the assistant director of admissions stopped by to be sure everything was going well.
