Anyone have any experience with this school? Comments? Level of rigor? Community?

Anyone at all?

I only know it as a hockey school. I think nearly everyone who attends Shattuck plays hockey and at a pretty competitive level - perhaps they field 6 teams or so? I think there are some figure skaters there, also. But I think that it is all about hockey - one of the few schools to have fall ice time, I think.

It is a very winter-sport oriented school (in addition to the hockey mention above). However, I have heard good things about its arts and music as well. It seems to me that it has links to another well-known prep school (common founders?). Can’t remember right now.

I believe hockey player Sidney Crosby in the NHL went there, among many other stars. Highly respected hockey school but academics are not the best. More athletically minded.

I thought it was all about soccer as well. It is a pretty school (from what I’ve seen on the website). I was hoping it was maybe acadmically competitive as well.

goaliedad…I think I have heard it compared to SPS (but the posters are saying academics are weak, so I don’t know). I would be interested in other comments/experiences…particularly if your child plays soccer!

Sidney Crosby did go there
i think you have to b amazing at a least 1 sport to even apply

Keylyme, I should qualify my comment about quality of education. It still is an excellent school but everyone on this site is always comparing to the top 10 schools in the nation. So compared to them they are not the best but they are still very good. You are right that the soccer program there is excellent as well. I understand that quite a few of your national team originate from there.
For those who follow hockey, Zack Parise of the NJ Devils also went there and many of the hockey elite (NHL players or coaches) send their sons there as well. I believe Wayne Gretzky’s son is going there this year.

Does anyone know about endowment/fa?

I have heard that unless you are a standout athlete, the FA is limited but that is from one source only.

ty concklin (detroit), ryan malone (tampa) and jonathan toews (chicago) also went there

Thank you for the comments. I welcome more particularly if anyone has comments on the overall educational experience as compared to the other major new england bs and particularly concerning their soccer program and placement success of student athletes.

Seems like I am the only one replying, sorry…Keep in mind all my info is second hand. I have friends who have friends whose kids go there but I do not know anyone personally…
Placement is excellent is you are a great athlete. Either into D1 university or into top level athletics ie soccer national team. Search which schools are top soccer colleges and you will find the schools where Shattuck places. Set up is much like NE boarding school, beautiful campus, full days, academic rigor etc but more tier 2 than tier 1.

I have heard much the same regarding FA (must be a star athlete) from a couple of folks.

For 07/08

Endowment 15,000,000
Tuition $34,500
Aid % 30%
Aid Avg. $12,000
SSAT Median Score 65%
Acceptance Rate 65%
Students Boarding: 164 Boys, 118 Girls
Day Students: 71 Boys, 34 Girls
Grade 6-PG
I’ve always heard it is an awesome place for hockey players…not sure about soccer.
They have 8 hockey teams, all playing 50 game schedules. If you assume 15-20 kids per team, that’s a lot of hockey! If you don’t play it I hope you’re a fan.

I’ll chime in here and say that Shattuck has a reputation to be fairly weak academically. Not just in comparison to top 10 schools, but overall, and in several ways. I doubt that the Hockey Guide quoted above is correct about the 65% SSAT—I think it is lower. They are not known to have much learning support, although they have some students in need of it, and that is why it is sometimes considered fairly weak, although a good option for the area it is in, or for hockey fanatics. I hear that the school requires a hockey tryout for admissions for hockey players, but I’m not sure if that is true.

Hi all! I am an international student and I get accepted to Shattuck St’ Mary. I am still waiting for my financial aid. I really want to get information about school.
Thanks for your help.

hei Babbo Nguyen,
are you a Vietnamese?

it’s a great school. i just love it. but i can’t play hockey or any other sports except the badminton. so i think I don’t belong to this school

i am just looking for schools which give financial aid and require no ssat. since it’s late now and i dont have time to study and register for the test. However, i need lots of FA(international student). is it impossible? Am I requiring too much?

Hi emLy!
I am a Vietnamese.
You are also an international student. Where are you from?
You are also a student at Shattuck-St. Mary. It is nice to meet you. Which grade are you studying in?
What do you think about academics of school? SAT preparation?
About the school which you have been looking for? I suggest it could be Verde Valley School, Arizona! It provides international students with huge financial aid.
If possible, can I get your Y!M nick! I really want to to talk with you and know more about Shattuck-St. Mary.

sorry babbo nguyen i am not a student at SSM actually. DId you get any financial aid from the school? It is such a great school, really.
And did you take the ssat when you apply to SSM? in the boardingschoolreview, SSM doesnt require the SSAT. That’s really what i care.
