She applied :)

Although I never was a student at UA, I would strongly recommend that you tour the school. This will cement your desire to go there.

I was on business travel near UA (Tuscaloosa) and decided to check them out, especially their business school since I was an accounting major. I LOVED what I saw. The weather was great, although not as great as say in Miami or southern California. I loved the campus and the environment. The facilities were great too. I even liked the food, but I am partial to southern food. Everyone I met liked the school and was happy that they were there. Even the professors that I met were happy there.

Frankly, if you wanted to go out of state to a university vs getting a great scholarship from UA, I would take UA ( Tuscaloosa) over going to many other schools. Absent some special major or some special circumstances, I can’t see why anyone would go to an expensive private school or expensive state school when they can go to a great school like Alabama much more inexpensively.

I certainly can’t see attending an out of state school such as Illinois or Indiana over Alabama. In fact, I don’t even think I would recommend a top state school such as Michigan over Alabama unless Michigan gave you a lot of money. I think UA may be one of the best, least expensive, hidden gems around.

Trust me on this: check them out.

UA has one of the highest percentages of AA’s enrolled at a major state school. As for Hispanics, they are a growing presence on the UA campus. Several years ago, in fact, about 70 Hispanic students from Texas came to Bama via scholarship.

^^^CACOVA…

shhhh… this is just between us. But, some parents just do the app themselves because it only takes a few minutes - super easy. LOL^^^

I already have filled out the application online and everything is ready to go…but when I told DS he freaked and said I was medling in his business- and if I went ahead and sent it in then the email reply would be sent back to him and he would be PO’d…

See the problem? Argh…stuborn boys!

Put your email address on the form… :)

It’s better that way, anyway. It’s only a temp email anyway. As soon as they reply, they’ll give a UA email address to use.

Has he ever visited the campus?

You’re not writing scholarship essays for them or anything like that, right??

That could be considered fraud and grounds for loss of scholarship or even dismissal from the university.

MOM~ no he has not visited the campus - IF he applies we will take a trip down there…the problem with adding MY email is that he wants to take control of the situation and do things himself…I am going to back off and let him take care of things - he might wait until the very last minute, but I think he will apply…

FEENOTYPE~ Actually what you wrote made me laugh because in our situation he will barely allow his parental units to even read his essays!

feeno…

There are no essays on the apps for admission or basic scholarships - such as the scholarships from the university or engineering dept. So, no essays needed. :)

Alabama uses essentially a formula to give scholarships - you got the stats, you apply on time, you get the scholarship. No matter who presses the submit button. LOL

Cacova quote: no he has not visited the campus - IF he applies we will take a trip down there…the problem with adding MY email is that he wants to take control of the situation and do things himself…I am going to back off and let him take care of things - he might wait until the very last minute, but I think he will apply…

May I ask what state are you from?? Also, can I ask what scholarship he’s qualified for?

:)

I didn’t realize that. In my day (and this was in the waning days of paper applications being the norm), you had to fill out a page with boxes to list your accomplishments and so forth. It was almost like making resume to UA’s set specs. Actually, I don’t think there was a scholarship essay then either. I was thinking about other colleges where you have to write an essay as part of the application.

^

I think that there still is this list of ECs and such to type into boxes, but no essay (except for some specialized department scholarships - like English).

However, the above is just extra nonsense which is essentially unneeded except for those special departmental scholarships.

For the university and engineering scholarships, it is irrelevant what ECs you’ve done; the website is clear, if you have the stats and you apply on time, you get the scholarship. But, you may still have to fill in those boxes - even though they are not part of the consideration if your stats are right and you applied on time.

I guess, if a person barely misses certain stat requirements or misses a deadline, maybe those lists of awards and ECs come into play.

But, no matter what, with no essay, it doesn’t really matter who types the info in or pushes the submit button.

I AM the mom who applied FOR her son - here is that post----

****I read about the scholarships here on CC and suggested it to my son. He was all - heck no! I filled out the application FOR him and again, he was all - why would I go there - I never heard anything about UA other than the football team! If I don’t get into UVA, I’m going to NYU and I don’t care if I have $150,000 in debt -blah, blah, blah. Then, the economy collasped. He then asked for the web site, took an iPod tour and the football team started winning every game. All of the sudden, he was asking things like: Can we go for a visit? When will I find out if I got in? Are you sure that I will get that scholarship?
Next thing you know, we are visting (during Christmas break and they actually had to have a tour guide come back to school to give the tour) and he is saying - “I’m going to UA even if I get into UVA. No debt from undergrad is more important than a big name school.” *

I too don’t think that it’s important who fills out the bologna that college apps are stuffed with. I considered it MY job to help him by filling in the apps as far as the "name, address, etc. One college insisted that he input every HS class by semester for all 4 years using their stange naming system - what a WASTE of time - as if the transcript wouldn’t have that information. I never answered any question other than a yes/no. All short answer and essays were his. It was the least I could do.

Lisa

^^^

Lisa, Yes, you were one of the moms that I was remembering. :)

There’s another mom on cc who also did the app for her eye-rolling D. She’s now at UA, too. LOL

*I too don’t think that it’s important who fills out the bologna that college apps are stuffed with. I considered it MY job to help him by filling in the apps as far as the "name, address, etc. *

I agree! LOL

MOM~ we live in Northern Virginia and he’s qualified for all of the scholarship’s [GPA 3.9 and SAT CR 800, M 770, W 660] - now do you see why I am frustrated?

;)

CACOVA,

We also live in NOVA, and my D and I visited Bama two weeks ago. That sealed the deal for my D, and she is now a happy member of the class of 2014!

Just a suggestion if your S does apply to UA, and you do decide to visit. We took a ridiculous route–flying out of Reagan and changing planes in Chicago–because we had free flights (frequent flier miles, so I shouldn’t complain). But I found out later that there are direct flights from BWI to Birmingham on Southwest. I know BWI is a longer drive from NOVA than either Reagan or Dulles, but a direct flight sure sounds a whole lot better! Especially since we almost missed our connection on the way back. Besides, who wants to travel through O’Hare in the winter? I’m not bashing Chicago (I grew up there!) but still, who wants to worry about snow messing up travel plans? Anyway, just thought I’d mention it.

Good luck with your S! :)

This is what I’m thinking…tell me if I’m crazy…

Your son may be afraid that once he’s given these great Alabama scholarships, and he visits the school and doesn’t like it, that you’ll expect him or pressure him to go. So, he is thinking to himself, “If I don’t apply, I won’t get the scholarships, therefore, mom won’t pressure me to go there.”

So, this is what I propose.
Tell your son that if he applies now (meets the deadline), and later visits Alabama, *he will solely decide whether he wants to go *and you won’t pressure him about that decision after the visit. He needs to be assured that after the visit, he alone will make the choice about Alabama without any further pressure. - put it in writing if you have to. :)

I would sit him down and say, Is this what you’re afraid of…

What do you think. :)

^^^

Completely aside from the above…

Does you son know about the Computer-Based Honors Program at UA. It’s very competitive (average ACT 33) and only 40 students are admitted. There are kids that turn down Ivy admits to do CBHP.

How is the international travel going to be? Would like to avoid the Chicago connection and son does not drive.

I imagine that your connecting flight would either be from Atlanta (Delta hub) or Dallas/Ft Worth (American hub) depending on the airline.

However, United, Continental, Southwest, Northwest, & US Air also are at that airport.

Is Chicago the nearest hub for United?

The B’ham airport is BHM

FYI - the school does arrange airport shuttles for students at holiday times.

^^^

mom,

Yes, Chicago is the United hub, and though O’Hare is pretty adept at snow removal, I’d still consider booking winter flights through Atlanta or Dallas, if the fares are comparable. Then again, we flew into Birmingham just an hour after Tropical Storm Ida had passed through, so weather can be an issue anytime, anywhere!

Thanks for the information on the shuttle service/schedule!

For those of you who live in the DC area, we find that Dulles is the best airport for us, although we do wish that United had not ended its non-stop service last month. My son, who is a freshman at UA, will fly through Charlotte on US Air. He loves the Charlotte airport – lots to do during a layover and plenty of places to eat.

As for the moms who are very frustrated with their children with big scores and stats, we could form a club. My son balked at us about applying to UA. Thought he would be better off at a lot of other schools, and he got into some excellent ones. But he is an econ major, and he hates debt. Alabama made sure that he would not graduate with that huge debt, thanks to the National Merit scholarship program. One of my teaching friends put it this way – “it doesn’t matter where you go to undergrad. It matters at the graduate level. You want to get as much paid for as possible.”

I’m glad that my son listened. Being thousands in debt is no fun.
