Shedding Student Debt Story

CNN Touts Civilian Service Corps As Way Of Shedding Student Debt

I’m sorry, but I must have missed the “hard sell” in the video! She seemed to be just reporting on some loan forgiveness program options that actually encompass more than working for the federal government or being a social worker. She could have gone into more detail about what public service jobs actually are eligible…ie. various careers with non-profits organizations, hospitals, schools, etc. The fact this piece missed is that not everyone can be chasing the buck, some people actually WANT to make a difference in the lives of others. I hope that no one would choose this route for the forgiveness option alone (that would feel like indentured service!). But, recognizing that a long-standing commitment to public service often carries a significant financial penalty in terms of lower pay, and providing a relatively small “bonus” through loan forgiveness, can help keep these teachers, nurses, social workers, ADA’s, and others from ending up in debt until their kids are in school. Especially since many of the occupations that would qualify require graduate degrees and professional licensing.
