Shenandoah looking for New Director of Musical Theatre

Just saw this (put up an hour ago) http://www.su.edu/job/director-of-musical-theatre-program/. Not sure if CC will keep the link up, but apparently Shenandoah is looking for a new MT director for their program. Thought people who auditioned for their program (if they didn’t know) might want to know!

I think until now they’ve had a ‘program coordinator’ for MT… Maybe they are just restructuring the administration of the program?

No idea- but thought it important for people who are looking at the school to know they will be getting a new director!

Yes they have a musical theatre program coordinator now, Jonathan Flom.

@VoiceTeacher should be able to shed some light on it.

The current director announced that he is leaving after this semester.

Yes, Jonathan Flom is leaving Shenandoah at the end of this semester. However, we are on the verge of hiring some very exciting new faculty (dance, music director, and program director) that I will announce over the next two months. We are undertaking an aggressive national search right now to find someone who has the same passion for collaboration and innovation that Jonathan had and we feel confident that we will be able to offer the same quality training as we move forward. If you are an accepted student and have specific questions, please email myself or Holly in admissions.

Best of luck to Jonathan in his next endeavor! And to Shenandoah as the program transitions into the next phase!

Keep in mind that any school’s program is more than the director/chair of the MT department. My D accepted at Ithaca when they had an interim department head, knowing full well that the college was searching for someone new. The new department head at Ithaca is absolutely fabulous, and the kids all adore her. I’m sure Shenandoah will hire someone fabulous, and with all their well-respected faculty who are still there, I can’t imagine the changes will be negative. I guess this is just a reminder that you should never choose a school b/c of one person - director, professor, whatever. Because that person could leave. You’re choosing a program, not a person. To choose a person is a little dangerous…

Yup! For sure! Be assured, I didn’t put this up as a negative thing- just as information. Best of luck on the search!

Thanks for being upfront about this before decisions are made. He was a great resource and a big part of the positive audition experience for my daughter this year. I asked her last night if it would affect her decision and she didn’t answer yet - she still loves the kids she met there, the other faculty she met, the curriculum, the location and distance from home and of course Holly is the best. She has big audition today and she is sick so survival mode right now, then wait for acceptances and packages and more visits for fit! Your upfront honesty about this huge change is one of the reasons Shenandoah feels like a good fit for her and our family. Thanks so much.

Is Jonathan going to another MT program? I have not met him, but remember that when my D auditioned for the BFA in MT program at Penn State, he was a graduate student who was part of the audition process in some capacity. What I will never forget, was right after my D got her Penn State acceptance to the MT program and finished all her auditions, and was in a car accident with very serious injuries and in the hospital for a while, Jonathan Flom must have heard about it and remembered her. He sent an email to me that was the nicest note! My D received some other BFA acceptances while laid up in the hospital. She didn’t end up going to Penn State. I heard later that Jonathan wrote a book and mentioned my D in his book.

^ I believe Jonathan is moving to Norway!

OH, well, that is quite something! I was in Norway recently coincidentally.

@lojosmo Ha! Was that a joke?

Nope. I know a student there and that is the word.

You are correct @lojosmo - he’s going to Norway.

Has a new director been hired yet?

We are currently conducting interviews and so far have some REALLY exciting candidates. The whole process will take about another month. However, we should be able to announce a big hire for musical theatre dance in the next week or so and hopefully a new music director hire in the next two weeks. ~VT
