Can someone please clarify for me whether it is or is not possible to pursue a dual degree at rice with the shepherd school of music and the college of social sciences? On the app it asks me to only check one box to indicate which college I'm applying to. Ahh!! Rice's website is completely useless!

I was wondering a similar thing. Apparently, as i have just heard, they "strongly discourage double majors," but that still doesn't explain how a person does get into both programs. Maybe you just go for social sciences (or whatever school) and audition later for shepherd once you get there?? My plan (if i get in and go to rice) is to just take so many courses in music that it's like a dual major if they won't let me get an official degree in music. Or i might decide to transfer into shepherd altogether.

the "highly encouraged" route is to audition and get accepted to shepherd and then declare a second major of your choice.

Yea, double major as a musi or archi is hard--I would say the workload is the equivalent of a triple major. I'm sure it is possible though. I might go triple with a math, physics, and elec, or math, physics, and caam

elec majors need 127 credits to graduate for the major itself.. u will be there 6 years or something...

To the OP... if you want to major in music, you need to audition NOW and get in to Shephard... then you can take other courses that make up youer second major..

You cant do it the other wa aroubd..

alright - so on my app I should just indicate that I want the Shepherd School?

thank you all for your replies!

yes.. because its one of the top music schools in the country, getting in is eally tough and you cant get in later....

this has been done in 4 years, of course by very few. there is so much overlap. math is a small major, and physics majors almost always major in math as well. i would look at it like a double, but a pretty tough one. elec and caam can get very, very time-consuming.

Yeah, Shepherd almost runs its own admissions process with its own pool...

Once you get into Shepherd, you can take whatever classes you want in addition to your music classes. Obviously, if you have time for another pursuit, you can take another major. On the other hand, it's going to be a scheduling challenge to work out. You have to ask yourself why you're taking the second major, how much credit you're entering with, and so on.

never seen a triple major with elec before... hmm

yeah, that's not a coincidence. ELEC is pretty ridiculous.
ELEC+math+physics = crazy/impossible, IMO.
But, hey, feel free to pull it off and prove me wrong. After all, I am just a plain old sociology major! :) (and pre-med)

one guy in my college was elec, math, phys. he was crazy. one semester he took 27 credits of elec/math/phys.

its manageable.. over 20 is possible, im doing that myself.. but all in the same field.. that would drive me insane

Its certainly possible to double major in music and the social sciences, I know of one fellow at Shepherd who is double majoring in cognitive sci and composition.

Lol, I was considering a triple major.

I started with:

Math 221
Phys 111
Caam 499
Fsem King Arthur
Fsem Culture of War
Caam 210

I ended with a 3.53, but that was with about 60% of my best effort. I had too many things on my mind to focus on schoolwork.

This semester

Math 222
Math 356
Math 382
Phys 112
Art Drawing I
Caam 499
Math 499

20 hours

I believe that I can get the math major by the end of sophomore year w/o too much hassle, and the physics largely coincides with Elec as well. I have a good bit of distribution down, but the only major hindering, I believe is

No credit for math 101, math 102

Yea, I was an IB student and got credit shafted on my way in.

what about doing a pre professional program? Is it as hard to do a pre professional program and be a music major as it is to be a double major? Let's say a Music Performance/Pre Med kid.

Haha - that's my plan!

well, pre med is only like 6 or seven classes

English
Chem
Bio
Math
Orgo chem

So it is doable, I think. Im not a Musi, but i guess u shd be able to

^ Can someone confirm is this is possible or not?

yes. it's possible.
