Sheraton in walking distance?

My daughter is going to be auditioning for a dance scholarship at Goucher in a few weeks. We're staying at the Sheraton, which looks very close to campus from google maps. But I know maps sometimes don't show difficulties like streets with no good crossing places or a lack of sidewalks. If anyone can tell me if it's a fairly safe/short (about a mile?) walk, I can save on a rental car.

We'll also have a bit of extra time, so any suggestions of what to do or where to eat near the Sheraton (on or off campus) are appreciated (especially gluten free vegetarian eating options!)

It is very close to the campus. I don’t know about sidewalks. However, I know Goucher students are always walking around Towson, so I think it is easy access. The Towson Town Center is right across the street and has lots of restaurants (see [Towson Town Center Mall Dining & Entertainment - Top Restaurants & Entertainment in Towson, Maryland](Shopping Mall in Towson, MD | Towson Town Center)). Also, Towson is right there and has plenty of other restaurants. You will not need a car.

Thanks for the info and link Inq Mom. I’m glad to see there is a PF Chang’s that will fit my daughter’s diet. Also glad I won’t have to drive through/around Baltimore!

My son is a sophomore at Goucher. It is directly across the street. And by that I mean a side street, so it is an easy walk. You may even want to try the dining options on campus. I actually enjoy eating there! Stimpson is the main hall with a lot of options and always has vegan choices. Huebeck is smaller but is mostly vegan. Towson Center is farther away from campus than the Sheraton; PF Changs and a Cheesecake Factory are closer than the Towson Center. Good luck, and if you have other questions I will be happy to try to answer. My son loves Goucher!

LongeyeMom, thanks for the info! We did visit Goucher in the fall, but it was our first stop on a 5 college/5 day marathon, so we didn’t do much outside the info session, tour and interview. We drove through what was probably Towson Center on our way out and my daughter thought it looked like a nice area to hang out off campus. I think we ate lunch in Huebeck (inside a residence hall on the 2nd floor?) It was a bit of a challenge finding out what was gluten free, but the food was excellent.

We both thought the students seemed very friendly and open. We were impressed that a biology prof we happened to run into while wandering the halls spent about 20 minutes talking to her. I think the only downside was that the campus seemed small even for a small college.

What is your son’s major? My daughter wants to major in dance and biology.

My son is majoring in English and trying to figure out what to do with it. He loves to write and does not want to teach. Yes, that was Huebeck you ate in. My son lived in that residence hall last year and it was handy to have a place to eat when the weather was bad. I think the campus is about 300 acres. I guess you must have looked at some large schools? My son likes that it is not too far to walk between the dorms and the academic buildings, so the size is a plus for him. There are alot of wooded acres surrounding the developed spaces, if you want to roam. Is your daughter a senior trying to decide between schools? Or a junior just checking it out?

I guess the campus didn’t seem that big, but probably because we didn’t explore the wooded part. It did feel like it had a nice buffer around it, guess I didn’t realize it was 300 acres. The school we saw before it was St. Olaf, which is bigger, so that probably made Goucher seem smaller too.

I’m glad your son likes Goucher for writing. Even though that will not be her major, my daughter loves writing and usually enjoys English classes.

My daughter is a senior, and has already applied to Goucher (RD, so we won’t know until late March or early April). The dance audition is on Sunday, and we are staying until Monday afternoon. I hope she will have the chance to sit in on a class Monday morning.

The best of luck to your daughter for her audition. I know it is a double pressure to have to get in both academically and with talent. Is Goucher her first choice? Hope the weather is not a problem. Maybe there will be a warm spell and you can explore the campus a little more. Did you know that there are stables and horses? I guess there must be trails also. Is your daughter staying with you or on campus? My son did an overnight with a student ambassador and loved it. That person became one of his best friends. But, come to think of it, I think that was after he was accepted. Is she going to sit in on a Bio class? Did you arrange it in advance? I hope it all works out well!
