Sheridan or other Canadian schools?

Saw Taxguy's reference to Sheridan on another thread and had a question.

It was nice to see a Canadian school on the radar screen. If our D chose a Canadian school for industrial design (since we are residents), it would cost only $13k a year. That is for tuition AND room and board.

Fortunately we can't care less about prestige. Just the quality of the program and the opportunites afterwards. We really do not know how the quality of Canadian programs would compare to the American ones I've read about, nor the implications for jobs in the states (my D is a dual citizen and literally belongs and has family in both places).

She is interested in ID and I see two programs up here. One's at Carleton U., housed in their engineering school, and they have a coop program. Another is at U of Alberta which very highly regarded comprehensive university (not in a USNWR hype way, but in terms of world reputation by various academic sources). U of Alberta is also in an extreme rich oil province so the resources there are world class.

I just saw that there is a York University-Sheridan dual degree offered. Taxguy or anyone: Is it just known for animation? How are the other areas in Sheridan regarded? I don't think they offer ID, but who knows what she'll gravitate toward in four years.

Starbright, I can't answer your question. I do know that Sheridan is very well-known for animation. Other than that, you would need to ask others.

Oh darn, I was hoping you'd be able to offer your usual wealth of advice :)

But thanks for your fast response just the same!

Starbright, I can answer that question for you. I live in Toronto and went through the whole canadian art school application phase.

Sheridan is indeed quite well-known for animation and illustration. They have separate programs for both and have really strong facilities and faculty. They even have free (from the last time I heard) life drawing sessions every so often - which is helpful to animation/illustration students.

For the York-Sheridan program, just a note that in the end, you are getting a BGD (Bachelor of Graphic Design) and not a Bachelor of Fine Arts. As such, the entire program is geared towards a career in graphic design (heavy emphasis on typography, design history, etc.,etc.) If your daughter is going into ID or animation, I don't think that's the right program for her. Though if she's interested in Graphic Design, YSDN is a strong school with good connections to the industry. I know a lot about the school as I've visited it many times so if you have questions about York in general or that program, ask away.

Carlton is pretty strong in ID though. That I've heard countless times but that's all I can offer. I'm gearing towards graphic design so I didn't look too much into ID programs available at other schools.

Of course, if you want to know about other canadian schools, there's the usual good art schools: Emily Carr and Vancouver Film School in Vancouver, NSCAD in Halifax, Concordia in Montreal and then OCAD, Seneca (animation) and George Brown in Toronto.

Hope that helps. Good luck with your search.

Thank you so much silverpetal! This information is really useful!!

Congrats too on getting into RISD.
