She's applying to all reaches! Will she succeed?

My sister is a senior! Yippee.
Her stats are the epitome of averageness.
..And all the schools she's applying to.. are for geniuses.

Would you mind chancing her, by individual school, please?

Her Stats:

Minnesota Residency
Major: Unknown
GPA: 3.0
ACT: 21
Rank: 52nd %ile
No AP's or Honors
JV Dance 9th-12
Started the Cooking Club at school (HUGE success, she got 236 kids to join. She got a junior entrepreneurship award for this.)

Her Backup: "I'll get into at least one, for sure."

Schools:
1. UNC-Chapel Hill
2. University of Illinois @ Urbana/Champaign
3. University of Wisconsin-Madison (I go there, so legacy?)
4. University of Florida
5. Duke University
6. UC-Irvine (mom and dad, grandma, grandpa, aunt, 2nd brother went there, legacy)
7. University of Washington-Seattle
8. Minnesota State University- Moorehead
9. Purdue

Could ya' chance her? =]
We'd appreciate it lots.

UNC-Chapel Hill-huge reach (aka not going to happen...esp. OOS)

University of Illinois @ Urbana/Champaign-No idea

University of Wisconsin-Madison (I go there, so legacy?)--seeing as you go there, possibly? But still a reach.

University of Florida-Huge reach (esp. for OOS)

Duke University-HUGE reach (not going to happen)

UC-Irvine-Mid-reach due to large legacy status.

Purdue-Possibly match? I don't know that much about it...

Convince her to apply to some safe schools!!! The reason they are all such reaches are because she has never taken APs and a very low gpa.
To increase chances at this point, apply to schools more around her stats and try re-taking ACTs would help for sure.

Check the UC admission website regarding her eligibility to apply! I think she might not even be eligible for the UCs

Yea, I'd say the majority are high reaches. Especially UNC, and Duke. I'd definitely have her consider applying to some safer schools, but who knows?

The cooking club/ entrepreneurship award looks good, yet besides that there doesn't seem to be a strong EC background. The ACT score is also somewhat low, and not sufficient for a few of the schools there.. Good Luck though, nonetheless!

That was funny somehow.

Scholarship Requirement

The Scholarship Requirement defines the grade point average (GPA) you must earn in the "a-g" subjects and the test scores you must achieve to be eligible for admission to UC. The University uses an Eligibility Index — a combination of GPA and test scores — to determine if you meet this requirement. The minimum GPA is 3.0 for California residents, 3.4 for nonresidents.

Eligibility Calculator

PS I've never heard of any legacy advantage at UC's.

There's no exception for legacies? My older brother got accepted as a legacy to UCI a year ago with a 3.2...(and a 36)

What makes you think it was a legacy thing? Anyway, I've just never heard of that. Could be .

She should be okay for Moorehead (I would say match). Anyway, I agree with above posters and say that she should reevaluate her application choices.

Erk-- I just realized how that sounded... Sorry, didn't intend for it to come out as it seem to have came out =x But yeah, I don't think she meets the minimum GPA requirements for the UCs.

3PointSevenStudent, what you said came out just fine. I sounded like I was being sarcastic to you when I wasn't. I actually found the concept of her not being "eligible" to be humorous for some reason. "Not Eligible" just sounds so mean, but it's the word they use..

I personally think that everyone deserved a chance for the UC's. Their eligibility crap has to come to an end.

Well I'm sure there are California taxpayers who have problems with the system, but I don't know if folks want to do away with eligibility for UC's. Most here on CC seem to want it to be MORE numbers driven and less flexible ( i.e less holistic). Many of us are pleased there are so many good public choices in California. The state schools and community colleges are pretty good options for tax payers and their kin who aren't in the top 10 percent that the UC targets.

yeah, I've never heard of UC legacy being a plus EVER! Maybe IF you played something like football or basketball and your Dad just happened to be the Hall of Famer from that school you might get an extra push for being a legacy.

With sis' OOS status you're going to be climbing a very big hill to get into any UC with those stats. This year will be a repeat of last years brutal admissions decisions. I admire that you want to help get your sister out of the house though! ;)

Schools:
2. University of Illinois @ Urbana/Champaign
4. University of Florida
7. University of Washington-Seattle
8. Minnesota State University- Moorehead
9. Purdue

she has a pretty good chance at those schools they arent really that great, id say those are her matches/safeties lol

UC's dropped any legacy boost 10-15 years ago, so big reach with a 3.0

Unfortunately for OP's sister, many of you are correct in saying that she is not eligible for the UC's. Out of state students must have a 3.4 GPA to be considered for admission.

Not eligible for the UC's...legacy wont count for much.

Purdue/Duke huge reaches.

She needs some safeties, seirously.

Have fun in community college. She's definitely not going to get into any of those schools with such weak grades/curriculum and a 21 on the ACT.

She was admitted to Purdue. She's never been this excited in her life.

congratulations to your sister! hopefully she'll have a great time =)
