<p>it is required unless you can prove that your current health insurance meets the University's requirements - altho we thought we had adequate coverage for our son 4 years ago, and I called the agent to check on coverage , it turned out that if something were to happen (and it did - the unfortunate stairway incident) he would be covered by "out-of-network" rules which turned out to be more than the SHIP coverage - so - check with your parents but SHIP is probably cheaper than out of network unless you are close to home</p>
